This lists some of what’s different between PSP, PSX, and mobile ports.

I say just play the vanilla PSX version unless you want the voices and updated translation. This hack shoves the War of the Lions translation into the PSX game, as far as I can tell.

FFT PSX is a classic, if a bit clunky.

PSP version is hideously blurry, at least on the vita. Not recommended.

Mobile is very good. The new additions are overall tasteful for a remake and there are some quality of life improvements. Touch interface works. I love the flowery translation but english is not my first language so YMMV. I’d recommend it unless you don’t want to play on mobile (fair) or don’t want the newer translation.

Mobile version is… fine. There’s actually no definitive edition, since no matter what you pick you either have to deal with HARDCODED SLOWDOWN(???) or garbage fire translation/script

The ideal, though, would be the PSP version but without the fake widescreen stretching and without the hardcoded slowdown. I think someone’s got a patch for that but I could never be bothered to try it

at this risk of promoting myself, honestly just play my version if you think the PS1 script is so broken, the aphorisms in the original localization which managed to actually turn out coherent are superior to 95% of the PSP script

the 2D-on-3D with the pounding sakimoto soundtrack feels so rich on the PS1 or in a PS1 emulator, any amount of repackaging they’ve done of the music or visuals is every bit as bad as the purple prose

I know you originally made a thread kinda posting as you worked on this, but do you have like I dunno, a mission statement on what your goal was with it? It looks like you did more than just some script work, I’m just curious. I don’t expect you to list everything you’ve done with it, just a general idea on what you were going for. Sorry if that’s a dumb thing to ask!

the non script work is marginal, I buffed a few late game bosses basically because they’re generally too easy once you’ve gotten that far and I didn’t want to weaken the player since it feels so good to be strong in FFT

ironically I never actually caught up to those bosses with the script so you’ll only enjoy one Felix touch at any given time

I think I also cut Orlandu’s HP growth by like 70% because I thought he should be more fragile without being weaker

how do the controls work on the mobile version, are they changed to be touch controls or does it use one of those on screen game pads

The game has touch controls, no virtual d-pad

Selecting a square to move takes some time to get used to because they’re tiny (changing the camera angle to a more overhead perspective helps) otherwise no issues

the mobile port is not the ideal way to play the game but it is a remarkably good mobile game by its own right

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the original. blame yourself or blame god.

i like the ps1 version a lot, its challenging and then really easy and it getting really easy felt like a prize for making it so far

its never like, jeanne d’arc easy, but that game is fun too!!

QUICK QUESTION is there a snes ranma tile based rpg? i havent played it since middle school

afaik the only respects in which the PS1 version is easier than the others are all specific to the US localization and they mostly make the game go faster by limiting the requirements to progress through jobs in the early game which is frankly great because grinding in FFT is dumb

they also might’ve made the later zodiac bosses slightly weaker which in the case of the two you fight in chapter 4 was a mistake imo but it’s not a huge difference otherwise

my interest in the mobile version is motivated entirely by portability but that’s less important for an SRPG/TRPG (whichever it’s dang called) than a typical random battles JRPG because fights are discrete events i could knock out in a sit down session, so less grinding and more breakable boss fights pull my consideration more

Also i looked at a couple screens of the retranslation and rolled my eyes. “I mislike this”

yeah i think the only grid based rpg id wanna play handheld would be shining force (which i have!), the fights are super arcadey. like you jump in do one fight in like 15 minutes, save and come back later

also you can always run a ps1 emulator on your phone

im actually considering straight up buying the original since i have a working PS2 and used copies are not as crazy expensive as i assumed they’d be
