Really hoping this gen isn’t a cakewalk again. I know asking for a game aimed at children to be challenging might be much, but come onnn. Pearl had amazing pacing.

Flying/Grass is kind of a defensive disaster. It has twice the STAB coverage, but I don’t know that that matters if you’re 4x weak to Ice and not super-fast.

The cat looks awesome, but it looks like it might turn out to be Dark/Fire in a later evolution, which is also pretty defensively screwed…

So I guess that leaves the dumb clown seel :frowning:

I dunno; I will probably pick the cat, because starters tend to end up competitively lame, but the only ones that haven’t been have been Fire types.

The real question is

#WHICH LEGENDARY?

And the only answer is Moon. Seriously: Dark Bat.

Okay: I guess the the Fire Lion could be cool. Oh oh oh! If the bat is ice-type, I’ma gonna kill Dragons with it!

Oh man, I’m gonna name that cat “Blinky” in reference to my favorite Christmas special:

Edit: Example of why it’s the greatest Christmas special ever (since that song kind of sucks):

game looks cute! gfx pretty blurry and all. the owl is my favorite i think, but i want to see what the evolutions are :<

I feel unnecessarily defensive of the gen 2 looking sea lion clown starter because everyone is (reasonably) picking cat

I will love him

maybe. it depends of the evo line

I don’t like what i can see of the 3D overworld. The field areas look kind of constrained, hopefully that’s just because they are in the starting area.

Also, it looks kind of unsatisfying when the fire pokemon gets hit by a water attack, i guess i was expecting steam or something.

Two of the starters are ok tho’, think i would probably choose the owlpear.

I hate the moist dog clown almost as much as I hated that moist otter clown from one of the previous gens

You mean the rad samurai sea otter??
i loved that little dude (though its final form looked terrible and out of place) and i love snotbubble clownseal too (even if its final form looks terrible and out of place)

im picking MOON version because i’m a diehard lunatic

you leave the ice cream weasel out of this

Listen that weasel is a pretender next to the real ice cream pokemon

God, I really wish they’d do a rebalance of the typings. Fairy is overpowered, Ice and plant are defensively underpowered, Electric needs another weakness, and even Water and Fire could use a tweak.

They basically hold back Electric by making sure that there are no decent physical attackers or walls as compensation.

Actually, even Dark could use one less weakness.

Look Game Freak, I KNOW you use spreadsheets. What logic are you using for your balance tables? Do you just give up half way?

I think you’re probably underestimating just how much of an impossible task balancing something like pokemon is. Like, it’s not even a desirable goal for them. Frankly, they don’t care about how the numbers work out in a pokemon showdown context, especially not enough for the thousands of hours of playtesting that would be needed to do that. Especially since, the closer they approach a balanced game state, the more likely it is that any unbalanced element will be more egregious and the game will be perceived as even more broken.

As far as I’ve read/can surmise, the Pokemon team always consists of a battle design team and the everyone-else team including art and design. Art and design inform the decisions they want to do in each gen and battle design work with them to integrate that while balancing/tweaking/changing up the next game’s battle systems.

The priority is probably on making new/interesting Pokemon from an art and design standpoint than balancing the battle system. I bet the second games/Yellow/Crystal/Emerald/etc games are where they can go in there and tighten it up more but for the most part but even then they can’t change it up too much or else they ruin the parity to the prior 2 games.
