Overwatch or other tightly paced shooters

nothing since has ever measured up to quakeworld, the super turbo of first person shooters imo

every time this comes up i get a huge wave of nostalgia for going through all the quake maps, mods and tcs on pc zone coverdiscs

actually I think vanilla qw has aged pretty poorly

I mean, better than quake 2 but quake 3 is pretty much a perfect multiplayer game and qw… isn’t. the weapon spread is less good.

And I’m the most ardent defender of quake single player on the forum.

inclined to go with tulpa as Correct here even though I spent way more time with quake 2 than any other as a kid; it is undeniably the least quake-y and the most otherwise obsoleted

There’s a reason it was called Rocket Arena yeah

:yikesghost:

There’s a lot to be said about dodging rockets while nailgunning another player to death, or getting in uncomfortably close to a rocket launcher with a shotgun though.

Quake 1’s guns are not designed for modern multiplayer balance but a well flowing multiplayer map will make up for that.

Can we all get into The Specialists? aka The Half Life Matrix?

The Specialists and the Opera on alternating days.

yeah, I just adored the Q3 balance where every weapon, even the gauntlet, was useful. much better than the dominance of rocket launcher and lightning gun and the others demanding more skill + luck to be useful.

that being said, q1 through q3 was really a high point of deathmatch map design (quake 2, for as much as I bag on it, had really good multiplayer maps)

Yes!! That official version of The Edge for Q1 is among my favorites, despite it being kind of ugly compared to most community DM maps.

Q2 is generic and has jello guns, but damn is riding that warehouse conveyor belt fun. I prefer Q2 Chaos to the UT version too.

@disestablished I’ll say this isn’t necessarily the norm when you play Siege. This depends heavily on which operator you choose; whether that operator is focused on assault, support or surveillance. Even during the times you aren’t actively engaged in a firefight with the enemy - make no mistake - you are always directly enagaged with the enemy either through surveillance or considering potential sightlines that could open up an advantageous defense or assault opportunity on an enemy position.

What say you @dongle?

If we are gonna play a mod, maybe it should be something more current/updated. Such as Goldeneye source.

Down with the bullshit flippy Specialists, slowly gracefully true-rolling Opera forever

Actually now I think about it, a huge part of my adoration for Superhot VR was that it made me feel like I was in VR The Opera

“The Opera” is ungoogleable, what… is it?

This sorta looks like Salaryman The Specialists, which is kind of cool? Also, dang those HL engine footstep noises are so beautiful.

I had a love/hate thing with the Specialists. I played it a ton, but was constantly annoyed with the server wide slow-mo thing. It’s one of those mechanics that is really cool in single player but annoying in multiplayer.

Have any of you played Wizard Wars perchance

I am not sure it ever had a heyday

ack

Specialists is the Matrix.

Opera is John Woo.
