So, having a dedicated computer desk all for me is starting to look like maybe a less likely scenario. I may wind up having to live the laptop life 4eva. This is fine. As it is my little “workstation” is a two-monitor setup, and I have an old widescreen monitor (sans-stand), propped up against the wall behind my desk in portrait orientation. I use it mainly for when I want to look at two windows at once.

A typical scenario might be, I’m writing some ad copy for a client and I have my word processor open on my laptop’s screen and the client’s website open on the second monitor so I can reference it while I write. Or when I play D&D virtually, I keep my character sheet open on the vertical monitor and have Roll20/Discord open on the main screen.

So! I may find myself without a wall to semi-permanently prop a monitor against. I use a second screen maybe about 40% of the time I’m on a computer. I’m thinking that maybe a portable monitor could be useful? That way I can stash it someplace when it’s not in use and set it up just about anyplace in the house. Anybody got a recommendation for one that does a vertical orientation well?

MajorPainTheCactus’s recent Retroarch CRT simulation filter. Seemingly shaping up as the new state of the art, for those with strong 4k+ HDR displays, and surprisingly simple. Of note, RGBW(WRGB?) OLED displays won’t work right, because of their subpixel arrangement. Also interesting to think about is that the increased accuracy of direct illumination/per-pixel dimming of OLEDs is going to diminish the intentional hardware light bloom really super bright HDR is re-introducing.

Started out as an aperture-grille only simulation, but he’s since branched out to attempting slot-mask and dot-mask stuff as best possible currently.

Interested in trying that filter on the micro LED MBP display

I can’t imagine the subpixel arrangement is worth giving up OLED response times and black frame insertion but ymmv

is that bad

oh wait insulation as in the capacitors, not like x-ray insulation

it’s been a long time since i had to think about CRTs

once when i was a kid we took ours apart with a couple friends and poked at it Björk-style. wanted to crack open the computer too but my parents were worried we might hurt ourselves

yeah a sufficiently large CRT tube can hold many thousands of volts internally for a good while even after being depowered, and these are just sat on a desk with no enclosure

the way you deal with this when servicing them is to use a shielded metal probe (or like, a screwdriver) to poke a ground connection into a rubber anode gasket which lets you discharge it, but until you’ve done that it’s potentially hazardous

It helps to instill in the devs a more visceral sense of the life and death stakes of the mortal kombat universe

I think I’ve just discovered a local craigslist Trinitron which is one of the rare multi-system CRTs

and now I have to decide if I want it badly enough to lug the thing and its cabinet up three flights of stairs
