From the same children’s book we can see Mr. Tezuka hard at work on Super Mario Bros 3, it looks like he is viewing the Character (Sprite/Pixel) data for the Mario sprite sheet.

The Fujitsu FM R-50 HD business computer was used to create all the pixel art for Super Mario Bros 3. It was an IBM-PC compatible which ran a version of MS-DOS.

Any good USB DACs that work well with the Raspberry Pi? I wish I could do digital audio out, but the hat is taken up by my VGA adapter.

good: my cool little buddy PVM, that I accidentally dropped a foot onto its face and then saw it stopped working, actually still works as I found out today, just the first input is shot and my buddy is back on input B

bad: oh no I think I’m going to buy an OSSC

There’s nothing bad about an OSSC!

I use a Modi and a Magni for my headphones, it’s great. You’d probably be fine with the Fulla which is both a DAC and a headphone amp for $100.

I used that until I, uh, broke it by pulling the volume knob off too many times in my fidgeting. I don’t think you’d notice any DAC or amp quality difference if your headphones or speakers are in the consumer mid-end, say <$200.

I think the OSSC is good and cool but then I fall down the hole of buying scart cables for everything and setting stuff up and it’s going to be at least 180-200 bucks

but it is my birthday soon, so

I don’t need an AMP. I just want DAC that’s better than what’s built in to the Pi. Unless there’s a way to use the HDMI out to extract just the digital audio signal while still using my VGA 666 hat.

Edit: I tested outputting audio via HDMI and video via the VGA hat and it worked! Now I just need an audio extractor so I went with this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BIQER0E/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A2IX3RNQE846HA&psc=1

My solution to getting clean digital audio out of the Pi. I got the shortest HDMI cable I could find!

is the (analog) audio that comes out of the pi bad?

Notoriously so. You can’t expect the DAC to be amazing in a $35 computer. I noticed a lot of pops and hisses that are just gone now!

good to know

How does a short cable help?

Just reduces clutter lmao

Cats doing music projects with pi boards have sworn that even a shitty usb sound card—like the generic $8 microcenter ones—are an upgrade.
