opening non-cutscene
Orange Julius is a huge force multiplier
Does the opening cutscene for Power Strike I answer the many many questions raised by the opening cutscene for Power Strike II?
Hehehe. Nah they’re pretty different from what I’ve played - Power Strike is the western name for the early Aleste games, Aleste the first doesn’t have much of a story, at least on the Master System. I think there’s an MSX version with added cutscenes
Power Strike II for the SMS was a PAL exclusive, so it was never released as an Aleste game, even with its inclusion in the Aleste Collection. It’s weird.
I didn’t know what thread to put this in, exactly, but
I’ve never cared one tiny shit about anything Warhammer related in my whole life but y’all seen this shit
It’s like the promise of the old Blizzard cutscenes propelled into the 21st century
Excellent stuff. I don’t know if I’d watch a full movie of this - mainly because the tone is so menacing I needed the break at the end of this one lol - but it works great as a short film.
Love the sound design, the sets, the camera work, the VFX, everything. But what I respect most is it’s remarkably restrained. There are shots where basically nothing moves but the camera! Most of the character animation is smooth and confident, unnatural. And it ties well into the cosmic horror atmosphere, which is one of the two interpretations of Warhammer 40k I really love (the other being ultra-goofy cartoon world).
this is really nicely edited but everything i know of 40k suggests the presentation needs a lot more high catholic pomp
that stated, it seems like games workshop have basically bought these guys up now so they’re probably pretty happy
The mood of this aligns with the weirder parts of EYE Divine Cybermancy, which is why I think I like it so much. The future is dissociated, alien; we stand in awe of that we cannot comprehend. There’s just enough of the catholic stuff - the censers, the living quarters and hallways papered with litanies - that it feels present without being overwhelming. And the lack of explanation for everything that’s going on, beyond the single line at the start about “chasing down rebels”, really adds to the vibe.
It’s nice to have a short story in this setting more aligned with the roots of the game in Thatcher-era British science-fiction. The hyper-catholic cartoon world of Dawn of War or whatever is fine, but there’s potential in 40k for many kinds of stories, not just the goofy ones where guys yell about heresy.
Apparently the decision to not have dialogue was a slavish canon decision because of course Space Marines all have internal helmet-radios that you wouldn’t be able to hear on the outside? Hilarious if true
But yeah, this wordless high octane violence and encountering eldritch space weirdness gives me super 80s anime vibes, I love it
I mean the roots of the game are even more cartoonish. For example
It was mostly just 2000AD with some stealing from other scifi when it was cool.
I say this as someone extremely wrapped up in a Warhammer phase right now.
i downloaded the first edition rulebook and there’s some gnarly illustrations in there i really enjoy
Saw this Guilty Gear XX one recently and it kind of blew me away given how I’d only really seen panning character portrait intros from the Accent Core games before
The one for Strive isn’t bad either. Are all the shots unique to the intro or are some just taken from scenes in the story mode?
The intro to Elden Ring is just excellent. The narrator sounds so emotionally invested in those historical figures.
