Oblivion

Basically I think Oblivion (even with its regression into an incredibly unimaginative type of western fantasy) and Skyrim (which I played for a few hours until the fact of touching every body of water freezing the game was too Final Boss to handle) work best when you’re alone in their wildernesses and just looking and listening and that they totally collapse into heaps of comical artifice during any kinetic or narrative interaction

yeah fwiw I wouldn’t have ever had that impression either

it’s actually spectacularly difficult for me to find even isolated “mainstream” opining that i don’t respond to with visceral disgust, fwiw

how have i gone so wrong ;_;

Honestly i think the idea that SB is all about radical outsider tastes is a hangover from IC pretentious aura of mystique bullshit. Other than like, talking about God Hand or Killer7 being good at a time when game reviewers were dumping on them. People here have always been more willing to criticize even games they like or that are Sacred and Canon everywhere else on the internet but like, there were people who liked Oblivion back in the day, too.

The most extreme stances i can remember from early SB were like “literally all RPGs SUCK!!” and “Castlevanias after Symphony of the Night are NOT AS GOOD AS SYMPHONY OF THE NIGHT!!!” like whoa, mind blowing takes uih

i can’t really actually meaningfully defend myself from this because it’s exactly the sort of thing in which “defending” (whatever that entails) yourself only makes you look worse

like, am i supposed to reiterate that shadow tower (not even a blip on “mainstream” radar) is my favorite video game of all time. or my ire toward wind waker (based not on its aesthetic but on its vapidity). or that resident evil 6 is a masterpiece. not good looks in this context

me defending oblivion while even n.b.'ing that morrowind is still the superior game is, uh

i think even mainstream opinion has turned away from oblivion, being the bizarre uncanny valley game that it is. but that ambition paid off for me. it’s a fascinating game! i really think that! i am really me!

hey meauxdal I still gotta play re6, huh

re6 is right up there with dmc3, god hand, ninja gaiden (2004-), etc. in terms of 3d melee-heavy combat games (kind of different since re6 is a hybrid shooter - not a lot to compare it to off the dome since gears of war is maybe the closest but doesn’t really fit at all). shit is fucking spectacular as that

admittedly shit as a biohazard game made in this timeline and not the alternate one where the b-movie vibes overshadowed the horror vibes and re2 was cornball action. you can extrapolate better than i can, i bet

well, i spent a huge chunk of last year playing the RE Revelations games and kind of marveling at how much of the charm of the series they capture, weirdly while channeling some interesting indie survival horror game bullshit at the same time. it’s like capcom can still listen to vidcon and know how pretty well

man now i’m imagining RE dead going evil instead of night of the living

it always felt weird to me that the actual evil dead games always went more evil May Cry and Soul Reaver than Resident Evil - but then I remember that a lot of survival horror mechanics must have seemed bizarre to other developers trying to adopt at the advent of the genre

you could’ve just asked nicely if you wanted me to delete my account

I think so! I think Oblivion’s mass reception is still positive but the game is viewed as necessarily out of date next to oblivion 2.0 and the two oblivion with guns games

But uhhh does a list of unpopular opinions need to be made?

i’m just a regular mainstream gamer

have you seen the new pew die pie

The good news is that the rest of the world has come to their senses about Binfinite.

3d ninja gaiden is garbage btw.

of course not. I just think the gap between the creation/market/reception of low visibility thing with an interesting idea and bigger budget thing with annoying cruft has narrowed a lot since IC/early SB and so the difference between neogaf and here isn’t as much which games we like as it is why we like them

also twitter has made the voices for offbeat tastes a lot louder and a lot easier to find and share
