I really like this game, but I feel like the whole thing would be made so much better by removing all combat
especially considering that in between elite: dangerous, project sylpheed, strike suit zero, and house of the dying sun, space combat is pretty awesome right now
I won my first battle against space pirates the other day. It was pretty cool. I switched out my pea shooter for a laser that does more damage (and more importantly is hella accurate) and had just enough minerals in my inventory to keep my deflector shield powered up. I really enjoyed it. I think I might go be a space pirate for a while.
After 33 hours I finally got to a third system, haha. The game still has a tutorial checklist for me even though Iāve got a 25 slots ship, 38 slots exosuit and 15 slots multitool. I know the whole Vyākeen history (and really like it) and itās indeed not flattering for the Gek. New system is still Vyākeen so Iām really curious to progress and read the Gekās account of those events.
I played this for two days and Iām still on the fence. Itās a terrible, terrible grind. I checked out the end game on YouTube and itās ridiculously grindy
Yes. Seems like the interesting events are peppered too far apart and are nothing incredible. They are also not procedural at all other than happening to different players at different locations but the progression is the same.
Chalk this one to āwe had some cool tech and forgot to design a game to use itā
Is anybody here playing Star Citizen? I just watched the Gamescom presentation for Alpha 3.0 and you can go on planets and walk around on foot. Or use a speeder bike. Itās got actual decent looking FPS combat and populated towns with shops and the whole shebang. Also of course the space combat looks way better than No Manās Skyās. It doesnāt look like itās got alien creatures but I donāt really need that anyway.

Hereās the trick: you canāt. Right now on alpha 2.4 you get a handful of space stations and poor performance because apparently they send waaay too much data through the network. Planets, towns, speeder bikes, none of that is in. Whatās currently available is miles away from the presentation.
Wait until alpha 3.0 actually hits, supposedly at the end of the year, and then watch for feedback. So far theyāve been consistently missing releases and not been delivering a very stable game. Another wise option if you want to try the game in its current state is to wait for a free flight event, during which the current version is playable for free for a couple of days.
Just checked and there is a free fly event going on right now. Going āthrough Mondayā so I hope Iāll be able to check it out then. I only get back home Monday morning
I named this planet āGodās Even Better Moonā having already used āGodās Best Moonā a few systems ago. Of course, itās really a whole lot messier than Iām making it look here, but thatās a lot of the fun of it to me: framing shots just like in real life.
I suspect that a lot of the people being dismissive of the game are underestimating what the procedural generation can do. This is a pretty verdant world, but even on the barren ones Iām finding that I can wander over a ridge or up a mountain and actually feel like Iām in a different place. That doesnāt happen in other games.
I donāt even really mind the survival stuff, but the HUD. Oh my god the HUD. While taking these screenshots I had to wait there losing the light for the game to stop telling me how to open my map. This is 20 plus warps into the game. Then earlier this evening I had an achievement pop up during a firefight right on top of the ship that was about to kill me. Surely they will patch in a way to turn all this stuff off, wonāt they?
I wouldnāt bet on it but there are unofficial mods out that could fix things. Thereās a mod that removes the Instagram filter the game has, making it look crisper, and the chromatic abberation at the top of the HUD. There is a mod to get rid of the annoying resource reminders telling you something is low when itās at 75 per cent. One mod removes the need to hold down the buttons to interact/move stuff around in your inventory. Lots of quality of life things. About the achievements I donāt know yet but I want to check out mods later today and really get into them
PS4, though. Iām hoping Hello Games will fix it.
Anyway, here are a few more shots from last night on Godās Even Better Moon which I had to leave because it was starting to feel like it should be enough for the likes of me. I immediately made two long jumps and finished the Atlas quest which hinted at the most frightening metaphysical inferences I had been making on GEBM but did so in such a ham-handed way that I was able to wave all of it away. Too old for solipsism.
Not here on SB I donāt think.
Iām sure pretty much all of us agree that the procedural generation is rather cool, even if some of us arenāt that impressed because weāve seen it before.
Oh weāve moved to that stage in āDIS NEW GAME SUCKSā where people post shit from the end of it everywhere and LOLOLOL DIS SO DUMB. Itās pretty funny how the internet goes in these sorts of cycles.
Well Iāve been playing it for 3 days + and Iām slowly changing my opinion from āthis is a middling gameā to āthis is a bad gameā. Donāt know what the rest of the Internet does but yeah, this is not for me. Iām quiting while Iām still ahead
If any of you are on PC, definitely get the Fast Action mod and the Exploration mod. The latter letās you walk and run faster, boosts your jet packās height and removes fall damage. It makes the game so much more bearable
