News VI: Fires of Rumorcon

Oh hey, I randomly caught someone streaming this in the middle of the night the other day and had no idea what it was. Nice to find out

Ah, this itch download version rules. There’s also a play-in-browser HTML 5 version:

From its instructions, most of which I think apply to the download version (whose mostly Japanese readme doesn’t note a and s for volume adjust–in English–but those work there too):

[arrow keys] : move [z] : Use ESP [ESC] : Quit game On the title screen, press and hold [q] to reset the rankings. press and hold [up] to cats and dogs mode. [a] or [s] to change sound volume. You can also play with a gamepad.

Hope the added fidelity in this remaster helps me see how this game is any good. I’ll say that it will be cool to dip a toe back into the id tech 2 atmosphere.

the graphics can’t fix the annoying mission flow and constant backtracking through hub areas :weary:

quake II is and always has been mid as hell. I loved it when it came out but it aged very poorly very quickly.

almost every other idtech2 game is a better use of the engine. especially the ion storm ones

Quake 2 is incredibly boring but it was a huge deal in its time and I think really established the plot-based fps. I have no evidence for this but I think without Quake 2 you don’t get Half-Life or Unreal, at least not in their current forms.

uk quake scene hated it on sight

also the first game i ever really noticed people obsessing over framerate and gpus

this would be true if you were talking about quake 1. both of those games were well in development by the time q2 came out, and aren’t structurally like it at all, like quake 2 is hub and spokes shit like hexen which is totally irrelevant to how unreal or hl1 want the player to progress. tech wise? maybe, in terms of pushing them to make it look better…but very little of the quake 2 engine is in goldsource, which is just quake but 75% proprietary valve code. hl1 and unreal both did more to redefine fps than quake 2, which is literally the same shit every idtech game between doom and quake was but fancy looking. Romero was right to quit!!

okay but do the meshes still swim

quake 2s idea of plot is a robot voice going “Mission updated” and then 2 sentences of text telling you to go to the next level. I think the intro levels of hl1 and unreal have more plot and world building than the entirety of q2 outside the manual. if anything it feels like id was more pressured to add more narrative stuff to their games and eventually just gave up because nobody was actually interested in doing that (quake 3), but then had to because half life so you get doom 3, which is way better than quake 2 still, as there is actual writing!!!

it opened the door. if you weren’t playing Diablo 2 in 3dfx glide mode have you really seen the game looking it’s best…?

quake 2 destroyed us by injecting the poison that is the gpu industry. for that, above all else, it must be condemned
