News VI: Fires of Rumorcon

Yeah it would be cool if instead Zuiki would use that license to make X68000 MiSTer shells.

I enjoyed exploring in Tacoma, both in the sense of wandering the environment of the space station and in terms of trying to navigate the informational landscape. See, the bulk of the game involves tracking down these recordings which capture all of the audiovisual activity within a certain area over a certain period. I might play through a recording two or three times just because different conversations were occurring in close proximity, and then once more to see where a certain person wandered off to or to search for secrets I might have overlooked.

There’s not much more to it than that, though; it’s very much in the walking simulator tradition, though I guess here it’s more a combination of walking and floating. The story’s fine, but it’s nothing special. I remember Felix having objections about its very geographic identity.

In Seattle we used to refer to “the aroma of Tacoma” and generally look down on that nearby, smaller city to the south, otherwise known perhaps as the latter half of our “SeaTac” International Airport.

I never actually spent time there aside I think from a trip or two to the Tacoma Dome as a kid and no doubt this treatment was typical ignorant unjust tribalism along with a large dose of down-the-nose-looking from us would-be elitist Seattleites.

Tacoma now has a game and a font named after it so looks like it’s having the last laugh. The font seems okay. Have not played the game.

Tacoma adopted its name after the nearby Mount Rainier, called təˡqʷuʔbəʔ in the Puget Sound Salish dialect.

the aroma of tacoma was historically because of the presence of a pulp and paper mill in tacoma that made the town smell like sulfur. It’s not really a problem anymore as the paper mill has improved its processes and doesn’t release nearly as much sulfur into the air.

no

there was another space station mystery game from the giant bundle that was way less polished and more janky and menacing

actually it was declared a superfund site and all the topsoil in the area + some of vashon island is covered in arsenic. A friend of mine wanted to garden and has to do so in large raised garden beds because the topsoil has a bunch of arsenic, not enough to get it replaced for free though…

as someone from new jersey (home of the most superfund sites in the country) who lived near a paper mill I can assure you superfund sites do not stink nearly as bad as paper mills

what smells worse sugar factories or (old smell) paper mills

I haven’t smelled sugar factories before but the mushroom farm one town over from olympia definitely smells better than a paper mill. In the same genre of poop smells though. A paper mill literally smells worse than a mountain of shit.

We need someone like that guy who deliberately got stung by every insect to make an objective ranking of paper mills vs sugar factories vs industrial pig farms

2000 to 1 A Space Felony. It has actual jokes and is fun.

I get to tell my Tacoma story again. At the end of the game you have to pull out a harddrive. The second I did this my actual computer BSODed.

In my experience pig farms smell the worst of those three but tallow rendering smells the worst

Tacoma is fine and short enough that I think it is worth a free download and trying it for a bit to see if it strikes you.

I looked through the same upcoming PS+ catalog release list and underlined Inscryption and the TMNT game. Inscryption I am very hesitant about as both the words “roguelite” and “deck builder” are strong personal turn-offs but seemingly the game quickly moves past that so hopefully the initial bit isn’t too much of a hassle.

I also considered Far Cry 6 but I already played 3, 4 and 5, and going “here is more of that except that headshots no longer kill people unless you have the right ammo type” is the exact opposite kind of change to convince me to jump into that particular pool again.

Far Cry 6 is at least as good as Far Cry 5 and combat kind of gets a bit more interesting once you unlock the bullets that set things in fire. It’s also got some new side quest types like these treasure hunt quests where you have to find two keys to unlock a chest using environmental hints.

It’s worthwhile for free or deeply discounted. I was able to get it and the season pass on the cheap, which came with Blood Dragon so I played that again. I really love Blood Dragon. Playing it again made me realize how much I wish they’d just make another Blood Dragon. Like what if Far Cry 6 was just Blood Dragon 2? That would be so awesome.

Blood Dragon but more and in a way bigger map. They peaked with the whole series right there, just on that aesthetic alone. I want to hear Michael Beihn grunt and groan while fixing his robot arm again.
