somebody leaked a bunch of betas of star fox 2 to the emulation community in the late 90s and early 00s. nobody has ever fessed up to it (and cuthbert actively denies it), but it was probably from someone at argonaut

The founder who stuck around sounds like a dirtbag capitalist, and after firing a lot of staff/the departure of a bunch, I think they were replaced with British developers so that the company is mostly English by this point. So it’s not the same creative people working there, and the whole company sounds gutted, and it seems like they are content to just rehash Disco with this new game.

Edit: okay, to be more specific, a feud between two founders lead to one of them basically divesting the other of political power, and to the eventual forced departure of the workers at za/um important to Disco’s original vision and the group’s collective identity. Around this time, za/um was expanding its staff, and I seem to remember a lot of that staff was not Estonian, but British. And during the departure of so much of the original staff, when there were big legal claims firing off between the founders about laundering money or weird investment conspiracies, the remaining staff took to twitter and begged people to see them as a collective whom had overthrown big bad bosses, and to plead people be excited for the studio’s next great work. So an Estonian collective dissolved because of a power struggle that was ultimately put to bed through illegal manipulations of finances, a bunch of new staff stepped in and thought the whole collectivist/leftist thing was like a cool studio uniform to vamp with, they said “let us cook, and believe in the power of the collective (raises fist in air)” and then a couple years later announced this derivative clone of Disco Elysium and an amazon show.

I don’t know why it took me so long to realize this is just the english word “parades” and not, like, a latin or something “puh-ray-dees”. Makes the name a lot less cooler since the subtitle is just a continuation of a complete a sentence and not just a funky subtitle.

I do kinda wanna play Zero Parades in spite of all the awful business behind the scenes. Would I have preferred a new game by the og ZA/UM staff? Uhh, yeah! I guess it’d be easiest if the game came out and was a piece of shit? But ya, I played the demo and the premise does sound kinda cool, this sort of entering a spy op in medias res and trying to unravel wtf is going on.

Since everything must be remakes they are gonna be remaking the first three DROD games:

You’ve probably noticed that King Dugan’s Dungeon, Journey to Rooted Hold, and The City Beneath have a lot of horde rooms. But then The Second Sky is mostly puzzle rooms.

Some community members started asking, what if those holds were more puzzle-focused? What would that be like? And then they decided to try to answer that question by making those holds.

We are pleased to announce the DROD Renovated project, which will consist of three new official holds: King Dugan’s Dungeon Renovated, Journey to Rooted Hold Renovated, and The City Beneath Renovated. Each of these will feature the same stories you know and love, but now the emphasis will be on puzzles using the same element sets.

Don’t worry, the old holds aren’t being discontinued or anything. This is simply intended as an alternative way to play. We hope it might be a better introduction for some players who bounced off the horde-heavy official holds, and we’re designing the difficulty curve with these new players in mind. But we also hope veterans will enjoy seeing our new puzzles and some of the ways we’ve played around with the original material.

Right now, we’re just focusing on King Dugan’s Dungeon Renovated and the hold is well underway. Each level has the same overall theme as the corresponding level in the original hold, but the rooms are quite different (and the level layouts might be, too!) and tricky linchpins take the stage over horde challenges. We haven’t eliminated horde rooms, though, just de-emphasized them.

And “the same overall theme” leaves quite a lot of room for interpretation. We know a lot of you still have terrible memories of Level 13, and we assure you that we’ll do something more fun and distinctive than just giving the maze a different layout.

We don’t have a firm release date, but we do have good progress on the hold already, including drafts of some levels with tricky themes to work with. Our rough estimate is that it should be ready for release within a year or so.

(If you want the original link Caravel forum loading )

There is a lot of
design ethoses that fell out of favor over the course of the DROD series, including ones I am not the biggest fan of (those games have so many tar and roach queen rooms) but I kinda like them having their own identity and being able to see how things developed. That said the originals will still be out there and we get a bunch of official new DROD puzzles so
 net win?

yeah i remember this at the time but thought the thing on the snes mini was just that rom, perhaps with some tidying up?

oh yeah. Based on the build dates, the presumed “final” out there was from June 1995, while the actual final version on the SNES classic was from September 1995. I don’t know when exactly the game was cancelled, but apparently the game went through QA, localization, etc regardless.

The marketing jargon’s a little tough to decode, but I guess this means I might end up getting a chance to play those new Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio games after all, since they’re no longer planned to be live service games
 Am I understanding that right?

I suspect you won’t see another game as desperate for your wallet as Sonic Rumble, but a game with a bunch of season/battle passes is still likely.

I think both the Crazy Taxi and JSR games are licensed, along with all the legacy titles so who knows what forms those will take, if any.
