The guys that did Jodorowsky’s Dune just did an episode (or two) of their podcast about this.

There has to be a name for games designed to resemble those from a previous generation (often the NES) that do stuff those systems would have never even been close to technologically being able to pull off. I think I stumbled upon the most impossible of these yet today.

Here is what the game looks like in motion:

I swear one of those bosses is polygonal.

Anyways it looks neat.

it’s so funny how 4k is just this buzzword that gets appended to whatever. i think when people see it they automatically like something more (or less ig if theyre cool contrarians) even when it almost certainly has no bearing on things like this… its just funny to see the way people combine the buzzword soup. 4k… “preservation” is a big one too lately lmao. wonder if there are any comments talking about how the megaman 8 intro has been “preserved” under that

It seems like low resolution digital media doesn’t get the deference that old analog or film formats do — see e.g. Inland Empire’s upscale vs public reactions to colorization, format shifting, etc.

I like the similar work done for Sonic CD, but it’s odd with pre-rendered backgrounds or TV/music videos that only existed on video. Very case by case, needs a skilled hand to make the second-order work

the issue is probably less digital media and more someone saw the crappy 5 minute cartoons they made for some random game 5 years ago and chucked the film elements to places unknown

like, Project A-Ko is kind of an important movie for nerds and they just found a negative of it in the past couple of years, no one is saving the entirety of Super Adventure Rockman in anticipation of a remaster

idk I just think it’s funny here that the video has “4K” in the title when the underlying animation is literally 100% vector

i mean, this fella here could just as well reupload this in a decade or whenever as “32K” content

I should do that home movies upscale — just how smooth can we get the macromedia flash smooth line function to look?

I don’t even like hard deinterlacing, but I can appreciate the Inland Empire AI upscale because I’m assuming Lynch’s embrace of it has to do with its shortcomings and unnaturalness. It seems as the same piece as his couple hands-on CGI moments in The Return. Hopefully the SD version is included as a special feature (but that seems contrary to his usual way of doing things).
