I wonder which Overwatch character is the equivalent of Dark Souls’ deprived when it comes to diversity stats

it’s cool that activision blizzard is woke now. this easily makes up for everything.

saying that you’re trying to eliminate tokenism by reducing every character to a set of numbers about How Diverse they are. the most techbro solution i can think of.

If you’re wondering how it works, looking at the fullsize version of one of the screens–

I think it’s a tags database. They built up a library of hundreds or thousands of characters and tagged each of these fields, then when you enter a new character the score just tells you how uncommon the field is. Low number == common.

I think all the tool can do is tell you how frequently your tag shows up in the database.

love that, even in their own scoring system meant to encourage diversity, the white dude still gets the most DivCheevos.

Also notable from the Ana pic in Busted’s post is that Middle Class gets you 0 DivCheevos, thus implying that being ridiculously wealthy would contribute to diversity.

My partner pointed out that Sexual Orientation is always 0 bc every blizzard characters is basically the opposite of sex, all the horny overwatch fanart underlines this rather than contradicting it imo, so many waves crashing on a desolate shore

Excited for bloober team silent hill where you pick up some pliers and the main character says “some pliers…huh. now THIS could be useful… hmm, where was it… that wire fence I saw? Someone’d passed through there, before… was I finally getting closer to discovering the truth about my father…?”. Except in a British voice!! All you could want to see.

i wanna be in the meeting room where they get the entire team in to think of as many slurs as possible for each characters. just everyone yelling them over each other before moving onto the next slide with a drawing of genji

rich people actually believe this tho, especially the liberals

so this is just a PR accountability scapegoat they can point to when a game gets criticism and they can say they honestly tried and pulled metrics from the “don’t do imperialism” folders or whatever, right?

using MIT engineers to scale up the bot in my work Slack that says “you said ‘hey guys’, don’t you mean ‘hey everyone’?”

in a way i think this is really useful, but i still totally despise it. the way they are selling this says it’s meant to solve this problem rather than begin a meaningful conversation using the data as a talking point.

and 100% this is just a way to create a character by starting with their “diversity score” and working down from there, OR to just slap a “diversity” onto an existing character and call it day. this score doesn’t tell you if your work meaningfully engages with any of the things your character has going on, because that’s impossible.

Anyway as usual with this kind of tech shit, it’s a SQL database somewhere being sold as a beautiful crystalline solution to a problem and will, in the end, just cause more problems than it ever purports to solve.
