pretty fuckin tragic that the ps2 versions of persona 3 are probably gonna be buried forever

it’d be a lot of work to port the ps2 game/s and then add the girl protag, but man, navigating the world via menus blows and the changes to combat are ones i don’t agree with

I liked the VN-style interface in P3P but I also like first-person dungeon crawling in Soul Hackers so

i played it briefly and like her part of the game is pretty watered down compared to the original which is uh. . .insulting as fuck lol. whatever i’m just gonna date akihiko and hope that’s enough to make me ignore everything else.

P3P is the best version, and the best modern persona game imo. the menu structure works so much better than the 3d space for the length of that game. plus female protag is canon ofc.
i do hate that they gave the option of controlling party members in combat, but that can be ignored.

i’ll die on the hill that not being able to actually move around the world in p3 makes for an inferior experience. people obviously disagree with me, but the ability to inhabit the space is essential to what I think is good about the game (along with the inability to control party members directly). the ability to navigate the entirety of p5’s world via the square button is one of the biggest among the game’s many flaws (though being a big “quality of life” feature).

I only just realised this is by the Sayonara Wild Hearts devs

It also sands off the corners a lot and IIRC, really undermines a lot about what’s cool in the original?

Didn’t they undo the death of both the Protag AND let you resurrect a party member who dies? It really undermines the themes of the plot being about making do with the time you have, because eventually everyone dies.

the former is completely untrue, the protagonist dies at the end of p3p. the latter is true (you can prevent shinji’s death as part of a sidequest at the end of his social link, though it doesn’t change anything about the story). i have mixed feelings about that change, but you can also date him and he’s my ng+ ending husband so it’s worth it for me.

Fair enough, I was mistaken. And still think the plot is better in the PS2 versions because accepting death of loved ones is a very good thing thematically for the story

I still prefer FES for a while host of reasons, like the aforementioned on map navigation, the anime cutscenes, and the less friendly mechanics in general. After looking up both ending is…so much worse without the final animated sting.

it’s also worth noting that establishing latter day persona tradition there is an aggressively transphobic beach scene in persona 3 that is absent only in the femc route of p3p. the dungeon-combat half of the game really is atrociously boring and poorly designed no matter how you play but it’s the closest it gets to being salvageable imo. s/o azusa kido

when i say ’ watered down ’ i mean there are literally characters talking down to you BECAUSE you’re a girl so like i get how it could prob be cathartic to still have the option but if they had actually bothered not to be gross ab HOW you are a girl it would be a lot more enjoyable.

like if you’re gonna gun for the ’ you’re a girl ’ thing at least acknowledge how gross it is sometimes. this is persona after all.

also walking around in p3p fucking sucks.

i prefer the menus and actually like the animated cutscenes in fes

I didn’t play p3p but the only part of FES I liked was the answer as a full length epilogue of what happens after your games protagonist dies and everyone else has no idea what to do is way more interesting than the potboiler of missed opportunities the main game faceplanted into repeatedly.

No player control is really fucking annoying though especially towards the end although I’ll forgive ATLUS as it was only 2007 and difficulty options hadn’t been invented yet.
