cautiously optimistic based on that trailer …

at least it seems to try the right things, only the driving will tell if they nailed it in the end :tarothink:

yeah, like, on the one hand they probably don’t have it in them to do as many samba de amigo and monkeyball levels as last time, on the other…

… you know what let me just reinstall the last one while I’m at it

Thought this was Marathon at first. I think it’s by the Ruiner dev.

Safe bets stops being safe bets when you are surrounded by teams spending the same amount of money to make things that look, feel, and sound the same as the thing you assume is a safe bet. Same story year after year in the slow collapse of triple A.

Between this and Beyond Citadel I’m excited for 2027’s marathon clone.

I’m really curious why they decided to make something that looks exactly like a Returnal 2 but called it a new name and are advertising it as a new IP. Maybe the gameplay will be more different than I’m expecting it to be.

played 3 races. this game still rules but I think it’s actually old enough at this point that they’re in their rights to make a new one

You’re forgetting Sonic Team Racing from 5 years ago.

I guess ‘we’ is the key word, because I played it alone a few times an wrote it off as a kusoge novelty. With the right friend I can see it might be some good dumb fun. I never even got up to the bonus stage.

I’m tired of “Mascot Horror” and have been since basically the minute Five Nights at Freddy’s came out, even if the devs claim they’re trying to subvert the genre. I’m tired of Spooky Liminal Spaces Games (which invariably misunderstand liminality). The grainy camcorder footage aesthetic feels like it doesn’t match the era the devs claim to want to evoke (early 2000s), and the fact they keep referring to it as “VHS” in their Kickstarter underlines a lack of understanding.

I also have doubts about how successfully they will explore mental health issues like the devs note in the description of this video.

And yet, I find this trailer arresting. The music is doing a lot of the heavy lifting and the bit where the cartoon dog talks to the player really stopped me in my tracks (credit to the VA’s delivery of the first line spoken, nailed it). In spite of all my grumpy old man posturing I want to see where this one goes.

MS pushing battle.net would be like if instead of HBO rebranding itself as Max, they just called themselves the Weinstein Company instead.

I really can’t make heads or tails of it, maybe not enough people played Returnal and they’re just like “ok let’s try this again and see if we get more traction this time”

Yeah, me too. I’ve never played a single one of these. They just seemed like the Goosebumps of the 2010’s, children’s horror pablum. You’re right though, something about this trailer is pretty compelling.

I’ve always wanted to do urban exploration in an abandoned DZ: Discovery Zone IRL, but I think they all got wiped off the map the minute they closed. This actually looks like a decent simulation of the experience.

Has anyone actually played any of these games? Are any of them worth anyone’s time?

As an adult I think you just play Amnesia or SOMA and forget these things exist. They always end up spinning out into SCP wiki style loredumps and sacrificing all mystery on the altar of pathos

ive played a little of some, i’d compare the experience to something like doki doki literature club, youre playing a game that slots into another genre pretty cleanly but with an implicit wink-nod to act surprised by the eventual turn the game is marketed on. FNAF I think remains the only one thats actually got juice. Not that we should be giving money to Scott Cawthon or whatever.

Otherwise, like, Poppy’s Playtime is basically a puzzle platformer, you have long sticky hands and you move blocks on conveyer belts, rotate objects, reposition yourself, etc. If youve played portal theres nothing here. If youre preteen-ish & portal is a millenial meme game to you, it probably hits like crazy.
