News & Gossip VII: For Blood and Headlines

show me the AI that, in a vacuum, could come up with being foreverly delitizied, and I will believe that the human creative arts are doomed

the point of AI is not to trick you into thinking something it makes is real, the point of AI is to make so much shit that you don’t care anymore. everything must be data, including and especially you.

the irony of the firehose approach is that it starts becoming incredibly obvious in a lot of cases that something was AI generated

soon there will be so much garbage that AIs will auto-train themselves on untagged AI content and enter a recursive loop of bricking themselves with trash

we’ve spent so much of the computer era dreading being subsumed by artificial intelligence in fiction and the reality is going to be AIs are going to engorge themselves on so much junk that they’ll be too fat to move around and be compulsive masturbaters

i guess i dont really see it as having a moral angle when i already have literally like 1000 games and movies and albums i definitely dont have a license for sitting on hard drives i know there’s a difference between like a company and a person disregarding copyright and stuff but um… i guess i do personally feel that copyright laws are fake and im not upset if other people think so too

personally my issues are maybe i just think it almost always looks pretty bad and flimsy and basically Like AI i dont have any wider theory about it being like Evil maybe i just think it doesnt look good

ethics aside, all ai stuff is shit anyway. the text is lifeless and quickly degenerates into nonsense, and the pictures are all ugly garbage where everything is made of some kind of gross smooth goo.

The ethics of taking a movie from a studio that paid the artists and then stopped paying the artists and is now just collecting rent, vs the ethics of taking an artists work, putting it through a machine and saying ā€œit’s cool, I can sell this nowā€ is huge.

I also feel very differently about stealing from small time independent artists and game devs vs big ones too. Like stealing Anodyne 2, a game made by two people, is totally different than a huge AAA game that laid off most of the staff after it launched.

This doesn’t seem like a hard distinction to make to me.

i definitely torrented anodyne 2, and zeroranger, and signalis tho, and indie movies and stuff (im sure like, tsai ming-liang wouldnt mind if ppl bought his movies on bluray or whatever) so im not sure i recognize that distinction personally. they dont even release these games with drm personally i read that as msrp optional

yeah if you don’t want me to download your shit don’t let me get it from drm free websites lol i will buy games from small devs i like after i’ve pirated it if i didn’t have any expectations towards them (cuz otherwise i’m usually just, buying your shit cuz i know who you are already) but i really don’t give a shit i don’t have money i need to spend it on things that matter like clothing and food the games industry is what basically useless at producing anything practically useful so it isnt a priority to me to prop it up with my pennies

AI generation (it’s not art) relies on theft of human artists living AND dead, exploitative labor in the global south to ā€œteachā€ these learning machines, burning of energy and natural resources similar to what cryptocurrency did, and is being championed by wealthy fascists who have an open desire to eliminate the humanities. It has already created misinformation about minorities, created non-consensual pornography of women, and further increased the uselessness of the corporate internet at large. See example: internet search engines being completely unusable due to this AI influence. Ugly, useless technology that serves no purpose than to be the logical endpoint of all these years of reducing peoples’ work to ā€œcontent creation.ā€

It seems that people love that it can create non consensual pornography of women, it seems they love it a lot actually

The amount of times I’ve had to see the phrase ā€œwomen are overā€ underneath some glossy garbage of a subservient Asian woman with three hands and six legs has made me want to go to my nearest liquor store and grab a six-pack. Not to drink the beer inside, but just so I have a bottle to smash over a motherfucker’s head.

ive known my 3d pig dog place on the internet for over twenty years, generative art just solidified what i already knew about these people further

yeah. even ignoring all the practical and philosophical externalities, AI is not gonna magically cure the executive function or project management issues that prevent little guys (read: me) from making cool things

all the AI stuff reminds me of the Joe Rogan tweet where he’s gushing over the process of cooking a steak and replies are going ā€œthat’s just cooking! do you not cook?ā€

it’s one thing to have food but it’s another to make food and a lot of people have that fundamental disconnect

I know I’m safe because no AI could make this labored a metaphor

im not being like entirely glib when i say this, i just think that sounds like a lot of videogames and the internet and tech in general already (maybe im just like too blackpilled on the 21st century or whatever idk) i know people are worried or have many thoughts on the subject, i just feel like the ai discourse is going to be out for 2024, i remember people being offended about nfts for a while but then they disappeared after everyone stopped caring

anyways, i guess i just dont see the copyright and ip law parts as like, the bad parts of midjourney or w/e. like i would rather not have copyright than have copyright expanded (also like i dont really believe people posting online are really capable of affecting that outcome so its just my opinion)

i think a lot of people have preferred to not think about this stuff and the generative bullshit makes it impossible to ignore because its materially affected peoples lifes whereas you can avoid a lot of the other miasma swirling if you try hard enough

The future is supposed to be AI making and selling counterfeit Joseph Cornells under its own volition. Not some dork telling it to spit out Taylor Swift porn.

I feel so ripped off
