a couple years old, but i think this piece a friend wrote at the end of 2020 is a useful perspective Abnormal Distributions: Writing in The Wire Jan 2021 Issue. – Billy Gomberg

i think the biggest labor lesson that will be gleaned from the 21st century is that relying on corporate/privately-owned platforms turned out to be a huge mistake, and i guess i’m excited for if/when something else comes along because it’s clearly not sustainable on either end

the new thing, if it is coming, is going to require a level of militancy and persistence most do not have right now. they will certainly need to learn how to have it. there cannot be a “people won’t read it if i write about small games/music/film!” anymore. it doesn’t matter - the old rules are over, and you do something because it’s the only option to uphold in good conscience. and you get together at a rate people absolutely have not been able to up to this point, because a bunch of paywalled newsletters or podcasts or whatever is not going to do anything. because the other real option is just the death of culture entirely outside of some elite/highly policed sectors and a descent further into fascism and cults of personality.

also i wanna clarify here that it was Epic, not Songtradr, that was actually responsible for these layoffs

so, thanks Tim. i’m glad your upset feelings over being bullied for being a nerd in high school has helped you destroy culture.

say what you want about Aaron Sorkin, but The Social Network was really right on with that particular point.

some additional details re: this in the FPGA World Tour thread

worth noting in the News thread - there will be a new 8bitdo controller to go with this. hopefully it comes out before the actual Analogue console

sometimes I wonder what our current economic system would be like if smaller companies weren’t collected and traded like fucking toys. but I guess that’s like, the whole foundation of our economic system?

I knew this would happen tbh. Remember how Tim Sweeny coulda just paid all the people they ripped off to make dances for Fortnite, but he didn’t!? Cause he didn’t “have to”?? He doesn’t give a shit about artists.

an acquaintance from a game dev community i’m in has a free media player made to run on an itch page for this use-case

edit: added a link to the actual tool because twitter links feel pretty impermanent nowadays

out today -

i played the demo of this - was quite fun! if you’re a fan of mysterious puzzley platformers like Starseed Pilgrim, or cute off-kilter puzzle games involving a lot of chaos like Baba Is You then it’s definitely recommended

Looks like some sliver of Uber Ent/Star Theory still lives and are trying to make another Planetary Annihilation but this time with industry. First time I’ve seen this kind of investor portal but it seems likes for real investors buying stake in the project. Lowest pledge is just under 500.

the new kong game seems to be the new gollum, in that it’s a janky mess. not as “meme worthy” as gollum or as much of a disaster, but still.

someone said they wanted this video to exist, so i made it:

I would not want to prematurely ejaculate during penetrative sex with a partner who’s on all fours.
