this is how i feel about the prospect of me and @digs getting a cat
the guy tulpa is talking about, is yanis varoufakis, in case anyone cares for some reason
the best greek marxist is nicos poulantzas tbh. i don’t know if i fully buy the ‘democratic road to socialism’ but it’s a useful way to think about our path towards the socialist break
Yanis has a bit of the red diaper baby thing where his parents’ left credentials were impeccable and he takes for granted that he can make more money while keeping his eyes on the prize. the last 25 years of European finance are certainly hard to hold against him personally, I’ve read one of his books and it’s good, but I would say skepticism of him is definitely more warranted than of eg Piketty who people dislike for having a much more technocratic/professional Marxism but who is a lot less inclined to celebrity or goofy private sector shit
i was thinking this and then the next scene in the trailer was someone firing a revolver into a gramophone, so hopefully someone’s at least having fun with how broad the analogue horror remit tends to be
Yanis’s one brush with power was so disastrous that it killed leftist ambitions in greece, sabotaged syriza, and despite his firebrand rhetoric, was a primary cause for the continuation of austerity in greece
He’s just a phony leftist. A lot of big talk but his only successes are in accelerating capitalism
I read part of his book “the global minotaur” that was trying to explain the 2008 financial crisis and it was one of the least insightful things I’ve read on the topic. just obvious to actively wrong analysis. plus he actually wants to be talking about eurozone shit the entire time. It is sorta amazing to me anyone takes him seriously after what to me anyway is the obvious disaster he helped Valve unleash on humanity with their gaming economy bullshit
I think the one I read was Adults in the Room which was playing more to his strengths grievance-wise but yes I agree that he has a lot of unexamined L’s
underrated game story of the moment is the Game Awards Future Class ridiculousness which has really gotten under my skin for some reason
which revealed multiple things to me i didn’t know about before:
most people (via here) have to pay somewhat exorbitant prices to attend The Game Awards, including some members of the press?
also apparently members of The Future Class (the thing the Game Awards was pushing to make themselves look more progressive or whatever) had to pay for tickets to attend the Game Awards too? with only a slight discount offered? lmao
also The Future Class stuff apparently was “sponsored by” Old Spice but none of that sponsorship money was used towards The Future Class at all and the Game Awards just pocketed all of it
it does make me wonder what is Geoff even doing? also that if we had a better media ecosystem around games i feel like this story might be a bigger deal lol. like it really should be deeply humiliating how much people in games world feel like they have to care about and can’t say bad things about this totally embarrassing and corrupt spectacle.
and the thing is like, i knew the Future Class stuff was a total photo op from the beginning. i hate the whole Gifted Kid syndrome search for industry respectability around stuff like this and Forbes 30 Under 30 that a lot of people inexplicably seem to want to subscribe to as being an arbiter of anything meaningful. i do feel sad for these people that on the moment they really stood for something on Palestine that the whole thing was just completely shut down. hopefully it will lead to some greater consciousness on their part and they don’t just completely burn out.
Not to mention the amounts companies pushing trailers reportedly pay to get stuff in the show.
oh my god it just keeps going. people complain about GDC and other game events not having open bars or whatever but imagine being this cheap to have a meetup at Starbucks for your incredibly high production value awards show where you take a photo and dip and then force everyone there to take up the tab lol.
everything i’ve ever glimpsed of the game awards makes it seem like On Cinema: Elseworlds, taking place in a universe where the hosts for that show genuinely became some of the most consequential, legitimating public faces in their chosen form
the repository is now cdromance again
Soaking the business and every sponsor for every red cent, as expected. Remember the TGA Gillette man?
For all of their flaws, the GDCA and IGF are infinitely more reputable and “real” than the fucking TGA, which is little more than one huge self-suck session for Geoff’s cronies and industry buddies.
For a couple more days you can play the f2p game “You adorable! Elfin Clay 2” and participate in a Gregory Horror Show crossover , as cross promotion for the kickstarted early access gregory horror show rogue lite sequel . of course.
