News at XI: Pro Evolution Gossip

The rest of the IDF still gets to use Microsoft services. It literally was only that one unit that got in trouble.

yeah the actual negative indicator here is that this stuff was clearly all rampantly speculative in the first place (hence why I’ve previously suggested that game pass subs were probably less meaningful to microsoft’s bottom line for protest signaling than like, regular Windows analytics) because literally every C-suite is playing with funny money and the previous status quo for “rampantly speculative” at least got us a Stalker sequel and Pentiment and Flight Simulator 2020. it’s a classic “sure this is bad but in a way that almost guarantees whatever happens when it breaks down will be worse” situation… almost like… america…

allegedly this is from a combination of 14 months of development getting turned into 4 months, and at the same time a new producer came on to the project with some story suggestions, and these aren’t story suggestions this is what the game’s story is now.

the most ‘value’ i ever got out of gamepass was trying shit that I didn’t end up liking that I probably would’ve bought. in the rare times that I 1) installed 2) liked and 3) played extensively/beat a game from game pass I didn’t feel like I gained any value, I felt like now I had a game that I liked that I would have to separately buy to get to play again, since I was never going to get enough of the mythical value out of game pass to keep it forever. and the PC game pass versions of games tend to be inferior or more annoying to upkeep anyway

i definitely was a big proponent of the value at first but eventually there wasn’t too much for me personally to play that they hadn’t already taken off (ala Netflix false scarcity) and by the time I saw how Microsoft was contributing it’s money, I had already ended the service, and just decided to sell the console and haven’t looked back in the slightest.

I found it fun to be able to just dip into whatever the big Game of the Moment was without needing to commit, but ultimately I was definitely spending more money on Game Pass than I was saving. I canceled because of the boycott and I’m glad I did.

The only time I ever used game pass ultimate is when I got a free trial. It was a fun gimmick for a month but I have such a backlog of steam and other xbox games that I never felt the need to continue the subscription and pay it. I won’t be renewing my game pass core membership due to the boycott and the fact that I barely play anything online on XBox anymore.

[1]There were/are plenty of good things on Game pass but in classic microsoft fashion the intended audience is always so dull and painfully narrowcasted. Exact streaming platform formula, the pitch “ it’s a subscription, and available to everyone, so we can scaffold support for all sorts of experimental works and genres ” immediately undermined by a slew of ‘prestige’ copycat efforts to steal market share . So many roguelikes….

That is only one of the many problems with THI4F and I don’t think some no name VR dev with a handful of licensed credits to their name really has the stuff to break ranks and produce a reasonably decent imsim of even Arkane quality, to say nothing of the original Thieves.

I mean I guess it doesn’t matter to me because I won’t have a VR rig in the forseeable future but.

The girl who likes working out’s website is a fun replacement for gamepass because you can try a huge slew of games including whatever bizarre shit people have requested, insane ue5 porn games and a good spread of new releases some of which you can’t get on microsoft’s service anyway lol. And for direct dls gog games is right there and endorsed by gog itself even. I still get to play the new silent hill with everyone else

the thing with pirated binaries is they are way less safe than other pirated media, I kind of can’t justify it on any machine I do work on despite having a full 40TB NAS of film and television that I immaculately torrented over decades. but definitely everyone’s tradeoffs are different there and I am pretty supportive of piracy overall.

and also I do think “game pass as a consumer service that you may or may not pay for” gets way too much emphasis in these conversations relative to “how Microsoft does or doesn’t fund game development” which is way more interesting.

pirated games literally can’t get any safer than the exact gog setup exe you get buying it from gog that you don’t even have to expose yourself to your isp with torrenting to get

Missed opportunity to go to town with that sort of stilted animation stuff they used in South of Midnight/the animated suits in the Spider-Man games.

I’ll give 'em a little leeway on not going full felt and clay shader since they probably gotta scale down to Switch and such, but c’mon…

None of this shit woulda happened if J Allard was still in charge of Xbox.

I guess it’s not that complicated overall, videogamers are price-sensitive users. AAA game pricing will likely face similar challenges going forward. If not for discounts, Steam would be show as an expensive platform.
