I remember a few Black Fridays ago ruminating on the idea of just getting up out of bed, walking a couple of minutes to Target and buying an Xsex

I could be selling that Xsex for a couple hundo in profit right now

Who knew that when I bought a series S and stuck it in a closet for two years I was actually making an investment and not burning more money on this hobby that I barely engage with

the xbox business should really be spun off into an independent entity. they have all the drawbacks of being part of a megacorp (insert literally everything), but they no longer get to enjoy the one benefit (burning infinite money for mindshare).

i guess xbox really was…the 2nd dreamcast

I’ll probably buy an X next year to play GTA6 like the stupid son of a bitch I am.

That’s funny that a Xsex is $650 now. I feel like a genius for getting one a couple years ago when it was on sale for $350. Likewise with the PS5 but less so since I paid full price right before they raised it. Now I just need to get a Switch 2 before that goes up.

I don’t know if I’m going to stay in the console game after this gen. Next gen will be $1000 consoles and $100 games. If there is still an economy by then. Are these increases a sign of the games industry about to crater or a symptom of the larger economic system coming unglued or both or something else.

Or maybe just a change in demographics. It’s only the 40 and up crowd mainly buying game consoles anymore, right? Most gaming is now free to play stuff on laptops and phones. Who needs to save up lawn mowing money or convince mom and dad to buy a PlayStation when all your friends are playing Roblox on their laptop. And most games suck anyway so the cost to buy in isn’t worth it anymore because it’s not like there’s going to be a ton of games worth playing come out each year.

So it goes. End of an era etc.

it’s pretty simple

the PS5 ecosystem is slightly more resilient because it’s a higher volume product, they stockpiled a lot and it actually sells in other countries so they can spread the burden

the Switch 2 units sent here were manufactured in Vietnam, which has a lower tariff rate than China (Chinese units are what Nintendo is selling in other territories) and they’re offloading a lot of the pressure onto accessories

the Xbox is basically dead outside of the US and UK so it’s selling less, they’re making less of it and they have no incentive to stockpile so it’s at the mercy of Good Economic Policy

I haven’t had a home console since the PS3/360. Most games I want to play come out on PC.

2020, smack in the middle of the pandemic and dealing with the aftermath of my parent’s divorce, was a real hemming and hawing of “aw geez oh man two new systems ah gosh” and I opted to just…stick with my PC and my Switch.

5 years later and I’m…sticking with my PC and Switch (1).

There’s pretty much nothing Xbox has to offer that can’t be played on PC (plus BDS, so), and I think the kinda Playstation games I enjoy they stopped making a few years into the PS4, so…I’m good.

Edit: anyway this is mostly my dumb hot takes but also - I gotta imagine I can’t be alone in this. You couple the whole “you gotta pay for online, and we’re gonna jack up the price every now and then” and “buy this proprietary controller that’s like $100 and also the sticks will go to shit on it, thanks” and it’s an increasingly hard sell for, well, just about any console.

Like Nintendo has their own thing going, but the other two? Well.

Looking back, calling it the Xbox One and the follow up the “Xbox series x” really muddied the waters on what console generation was which. I have to think about it for a second every time. I cannot think of a single definitive game for the series x gen except maybe Forza horizon and gears of war 4. Not even, like, Halo.

While I never particularly liked Sonys first party stuff at least it was an identity. Horizon Zero Dawn, Last Of Us, God Of War. They’re still riding that a decade later.

but really these are boxes to play the latest CoD and FIFA and Madden titles so everything else is just marketing.

I bought Sonic Racing Crossworlds on Steam because i didn’t want to give Microsoft any money. Also helps that it’s deck verified.

On the subject of avoiding Microsoft stuff, it doesn’t hurt that if you’re on PC there are much cheaper alternatives to the standard Xbox controller that work great and cost half as much.

Edit: actually less, now that I think of it, since they jacked the prices of those up, too.

Sadly the best Forza Horizon games are 1 and 2 and those are locked in Xbox hell.

can you even buy them at this point?

Pretty sure they’re both long gone. You can get them on disc at least (no DLC though). Base game of the original Horizon is still pretty good - turns out Colorado is a nice place to scoot around.

Truly gone forever is the Forza Horizon 2 Fast & the Furious digital standalone game…was it any good? I dunno, probably, since it’s Forza Horizon. I guess I should fire it up one day.

I have only played Horizon 5 and got very offput by how much the game treats you like a fucking god. I just wanna race my cars around. this is like when Animal Crossing made you the mayor of the town.

yeah I stomached all that garbage for the duration of 4 because I liked the game enough, but when I tried to install 5 it turns out that I had just really fucking had my fill of the rancid vibes

I should emulate the original game at some point. I remember playing it a bit when it came out and I was like ‘yep, it certainly feels like colorado’
