I’m kinda offended on behalf of Eminem here

the tiktok thing with gen x people being like IM GOING TO BEAT UP ALL THESE CHILDREN TRYING TO CANCEL EMINEM (there was a trend just saying that he sucks more than old people think) and completely crashing out over it was one of the things that made me think about the lead graph. its also obvious that these are parents who are just upset with their 12 year old kids for not liking their music

this has nothign to do with the ā€˜out of touch’ conversation. ive always been out of touch with music like that. the only difference now is people dont go WHAAAT HOWWWW when i say i havent heard of shit i dont care about

i have known for a long time that there’s a gen z mallgoth revival. i feel like anyone liking eminem in the 2020s probably also wants to show you clips of the latest south park episode on their phone though

When I was 14 and One Step Closer came out I already thought of Linkin Park as ā€œmusic that kids likeā€. I haven’t updated my beliefs since then and the world has conveniently kept in sync with my views.

brooks calling it ā€˜little brother music’ is a non videogame thing I think about a lot

That is perfect

That makes sense because I was the little brother.

the most pretentious guy i knew when i was 14 imported linkin park’s first album before anyone else here had even heard of them after hearing one of their tracks online.
i didn’t actually see or hear them until several months later, when one step closer was on a home-made compilation tape of music videos that was playing at someone else’s house one time. amazingly, even then i was smart enough to think ā€œthese guys are trying really really hard to market themselves directly at me, and it’s not working at allā€

looking at the dates, it must have also have been around this time when i saw the video for cradle of filth’s her ghost in the fog, which actually had a huge effect on me, opening my eyes to a whole new way music could sound

(Original line up) Linkin Park’s status in the current numetal revival pantheon is so jarring for me because they felt like they were sounding behind the curve when they originally came out. And they were dogged by the allegations that they were a manufactured act.

Woodstock 99 felt like the death knell for the really rap centric stuff. And then 2000 was the whole ā€œtheā€ band era. Meanwhile White Pony was so notable because it was a deliberate departure (and gave way to stuff like Team Sleep with a bunch of college radio level guests). POD’s Satellite was the old nu formula and famously rode through the 9-11 radio ban (which didn’t really hurt that second SOAD album very much in retrospect), but again it seemed kind of square and was in like every Happy Madison movie for the next couple years. Iowa is considered a high watermark I guess but I never got into it and I think it’s more straight ahead metal, without any pseudo raps about Marlon Brando like that first record.

So yeah it felt like it was for little brothers that had been half listening to what was going on three or four years prior and wanted their own reconstituted version.

Did nu metal ever make the tranistion from youth music to youth pastor music that made me distrust grunge when i was a wee urchin

Nu metal’s immediate successor metalcore seemed like it was mostly Christian bands

I was more unsettled by the eugenics aspect:

the Earthion MD ROM has been extracted from the Steam files

personally still recommend financially supporting the project if possible, but i’m happy i can play the game as intended and don’t have to wait for Limited Run to send me a cartridge in 10 years

I feel like nu metal was spared the worst of this because 00s pop punk was so much closer to the ideal youth pastor sound that it was easier to manufacture christian pop punk bands

I hate everything about nu metal starting with the use of the spelling ā€œnuā€

Me too. As I have been saying a lot lately, I was there when it was new and supposedly targeted at me, it sucked then and it sucks now. You can’t fool me
