Yeah, I gotta say, someone who knows to at least want to make a game look like that warrants, at minimum, a healthy curiosity. I drew games on paper as a child that I knew were supposed to look like that.

STRAFE is super fun, the GALLONS OF BLOOD SPILLED measure of excellence is top notch. I can’t tell how much of my enjoyment was derived from its keyboard + mouse control scheme in this current sea of controller games though, it feels very comfortable (until you’re in one of those death hallways where strafing backwards just spawns more and more waves of robot enemies from collapsing walls, anyway)

Their website is pretty gnarly as well, http://www.strafe1996.com/

Yup! What makes it extra confusing is that Ryuichi Nishizawa is advising on both of them!

Maybe the closest any of us is going to get to a game that takes place in the Ico box art

A demake of Thekla Inc’s 2016 game ā€œThe Witnessā€ has you exploring a mysterious island* and solving puzzles. Developed over 2 months, this Nes ROM stands as a reinterpretation and tribute to the original work. Aimed at both players unfamiliar with the full game who want to learn what it’s like, as well as veterans that need a fix of new puzzle panels to solve.

32 puzzles with various rules to discover
Overhead world with 4-way scrolling
16 full screens of map to explore
NROM based hardware, no mapper necessary!
Run in your favorite NES emulator, or on original hardware using a Powerpak or Everdrive!
