But the controls are what both make and break Crusader! When you get into that perfect zone and shit just flows and you flat out run through an area and don’t run into obstacles and shit is just the greatest feeling.

And nowadays since I’m playing it in DOSbox anyway I have a custom key config that helps a bit.

Call it foul conditioning - I must - but it’s odd to hear spoken Japanese in something that looks like that?

I refuse to believe in a place in this world without burrito

Burritos are for coastal elites ONLY.
"I think they were going to poison Big Show and give him a spiked burrito. The whole concept was: ‘We’re going to spike his food, spike the burrito, you cut to a vignette before that showing him eating it, and then he passes out in the ring.’ So, Vince goes, ‘Burrito?! Who the hell knows what a burrito is?’ It was such a far concept. And everyone in the room goes, ‘Well, we know what a burrito is.’ And Vince goes, ‘Well, where the hell have I been?’

“But, the funny thing is, Wade, every day at noon, Vince’s secretary would walk into the office - the writing room - with a burrito. It was a steak-wrap cut in half. And he would put ketchup on it. Every day, he was eating a burrito and not knowing what it was. But, that’s the idea - when you’re in a bubble and in a business where you’re ostracized from society, it’s you and them, that’s it. Everyone else is an outsider, so things like that do make sense in the confines of the wrestling world.”
The PSX version kind-of has real controls. Ideally it’d be twin stick, but it’s still an improvement over the PC. The smooth-scrolling is nice too. Worth the graphical downgrade imo.

Another reminder that Mario is not the hero the working class needs.

Was he ever a plumber in the first place though? I mean we have seen him go from carpenter to plumber to doctor, but never have we seen any evidence that he is qualified for the role. I would say he is just a big ol’ fraud.

i think superstar saga is the only game where you actually Do Plumbing unless you want to count the original mario bros as cleaning up the blockage from pipes and that blockage being monsters

For a split second I thought this was a Kawazu game I’d never heard about. Superstar SaGa. Oh man.

Apparently some guys just implemented CHD support in the libretro mednafen Playstation core. Also, it had been added sometime in the recent past to the med/beetle Saturn core as well.

This is real cool, hot dang. Guess it’s time to switch over from using standalone mednafen.

I hope openemu smartens up and moves to beetle psx too

what’s this means for someone who’s looking to grab an emu but doesn’t know anything beyond setting up epsxe five years ago?

Well, hmm. CHD is a compressed container format created by MAME devs to store/load hard-drive and optical-disc stuff. It does some stuff to separate itself as a format from simply ZIP’n, FLAC-encodes audio tracks and better compression, yada yada.

 • Problem #1 CHD is fine, but support outside of MAME itself is slim/nonexistent.

So: what’s actually interesting to a user is the accessibility and archival maintenance angle. Obtaining proper working consistent Playstation/Saturn (and disc-based stuff in general) is a bit of a shit show, trashy BIN/CUE and ISO/MP3 stuff in differing states abounds. The MAME project in general and software library in particular is consistently maintained and widely distributed. Anything that’s part of the project gets the full preservation benefits of the whole shebang, basically, regardless of how well it’s actually supported in the software.

 • Problem #2 MAME can’t actually emulate PSX/SAT well.

Mednafen is the best Playstation emulator, has been for a while; is basically the best option for Saturn emulation if still behind SSF in compatibility. Mednafen does not support compressed disc images of any type, you have to feed it raw CUE files. It also doesn’t have a trad GUI, is arguably obtuse to setup (all config in a big dense .ini file, etc).

RetroArch, popular with the kids, is essentially a modular emulation frontend + i/o host that uses plugin “libretro” “cores” for emulating a multitude of systems, can now load these CHD files with its Mednafen-derived “Beetle” core.

Essentially everyone who can get to archive.org torrents has access to a relatively current MAME software full-set, and thus a nearly perfect Saturn and Playstation library, which can now actually be used.
