Ehh I got nothing. He’s pretty good though, yeah. Everyone remembers him from Fifth Element and Friday and Rush Hour but no one remembers him from that movie with Charlie Sheen.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was bad, but I had a fantastic time watching it thanks to Tom Waits’s incredible picaresque cartoon devil performance.

I have a Smokey and the Bandit boxset. Who wants to come over and watch it all with me.

I typed that weeks ago and I guess I never posted it. It was going to lead to a long story about a moving guy seeing my mom’s DVD collection (which was actually all bits of my DVD collection I’d lent her) and shaking his head in obvious confusion. I know the Smokey boxset was in there. Cannonball Run. The Cat Returns. Spice World. Tender Mercies. But I can’t remember the rest, so there’s no point in telling the story. Except I just did.

Horror may be the worst film genre that isn’t comedy but considering doing an SB Horror Stream Club for October. The lineup would be one Phantasm movie per week and nothing else, cuz Phantasm is a great movie and the rest are…they’re something.

I have to admit that I’m a sucker for movies like Phantasm 2 and Evil Dead 2 that have montages of the protagonists building improbable/impractical weapons.

I want to give you all a quick update to inform you that the Wikipedia article on the Critters film series is insanely good

The central focus of the series is upon a group of malevolent carnivorous aliens from outer space, called Krites, that have the ability to roll into balls (cf. hedgehogs) and combine into a pernicious sphere that can roll across the landscape and cause mayhem. In appearance, the individual Krites resemble small furry/spiky animals with large mouths and many sharp teeth. Throughout the movies they attack humans by biting and attempting to eat them, or at least a piece of them. The spikes on their backs can be launched as projectiles (rendering the victim unconscious). The coloration of the Krites varies between black, brown and navy blue. In the original film they were also able to grow to a much larger size, although this ability was dropped for the sequels.

Last week, one of my co-workers told me that she had heard something on the radio about Mother! and that while she had no interest in seeing it, she thought it sounded like something that would appeal to me. I watched it over the weekend, and she was right.

A lot of movies I either end up disliking more as time passes and I have a chance to think about them, or I don’t think about them at all (which I guess is just as bad). But the more I think about this one, the more I’m impressed with it.

I can understand why it’s so divisive, and why people would (unfavorably) consider it preachy, pretentious, unsubtle, boring, or unpleasant. I don’t think I could convince anyone that it’s not those things. But whatever it is, I’m glad it exists.

Warning shots are bullshit! (Phantasm)

This movie is so good, it’s like a weird fever dream with a rad soundtrack. And there’s like, a 2 minute scene where one of the main characters and their friend, who is an ice cream man, just start jamming out on the porch for absolutely no fucking reason. It’s so great.

And the silver death ball scene is so effective because it’s so unanchored in what you understand the movie’s rules to be; a completely exhilarating shock of gore. So great!

I love how the ice cream friend fits all the rules for ‘loser offed partway through’ and even has a great car crash, then twenty minutes later – naw, he’s still truckin’.

Yeah, and Reggie gets all Big Pimpin’ in II, if I recall correctly. I need to re-watch these. I’m totally down if somebody wants to host a Rabbit session or something for these movies some time (or just for horror in general).

I’m having a really hard time remembering if I’ve seen III, so I assume if I have, it didn’t leave a good or any impression on me.
