succession is fantastic but his track record apart from that is pretty poor
the only Mann thing not mentioned yet is Luck
Milch’s pen and Mann’s camera ego battling for the soul of a show about horse racing with fuckin Nick Nolte AND Dustin Hoffman AND Richard Kind AND Dennis Farina AND Michael Gambon that got cancelled for dubious reasons after 8 episodes. it’s great.

Yeah, if he is actively involved in making this, I’ll be really curious how it turns out. It’s encouraging that it’s not just him/his studio cashing a quick rights check.
Mann is too luscious and gorgeous and empathetic and obviously good. If you want to explore true filmic hypermasculinity you must graduate to Spartan

2 horses, which died in freak accidents while not even filming but walking to their stables in routine fashion is not “a few dozen”
Edit: okay I got that wrong. 2 horses died during filming, 1 died while not filming, HBO accused of covering up a 4th death. I rescind my statement about dubious reasons
the pilot has a (fictional) horse being euthanized after breaking its leg and it’s just devastating. it’s also accurate and unflinching. It is I guess an irony that the show was cancelled after having stuff happen during filming that happens routinely in real horse racing, which has not been cancelled

vice was like a minute from calling dick cheney the coolest guy who has ever lived
it becomes immediately apparent from reading The Big Short that a lot of the stylistic flourishes of the movie are almost just lifted from the text and that applying them to the original screenplay of Vice rings hollow because Michael Lewis can actually fucking write and make something that comes off as very dry very exciting
Cheney’s story should be a hell of a lot more interesting than whatever McKay put on up screen
