I legit had a “what the fuck” reaction when Spot tears a hole in the wing of the lead cult dude in addition to Arlow murdering the rest (yes, I know he just knocked them into the water, but if Poppa didn’t survive that shit, then, well)
snowpiercer was neat. the way big action scenes are telegraphed with cam-shaking were sort of annoying but by the hatchet fight i got used to them. i like how its a movie with “boss fights” and that it has park-chan-wook in the credits while having a scene where a fish is gutted and the protagonist goes through a narrow corridor slashing heaps of people using a short melee weapon.
i also enjoyed the tension build-ups (how in some slower moments in-between/during conflicts it’s almost…cozy but in a weird way?) and the overall cartoon-absurdity going on. the teacher, in particular, was really creepy for how real yet unbealivable it acted. the cgi stuff helped as well.
Before Apocalypse hijacked his bod it’s suggested that Oscar Isaac was himself a Wolverine and he does not hang dong.
When Wolverine himself appears it’s the perfect opportunity for him to hang dong. It’s even comics canon! But Wolverine does not hang dong.
What the eff, Singer.
Some people might argue that the conclusion of his brief time in the film would play a little weird if Wolverine’s huge ackman was hanging glorious for all to see, what with young Jean Grey facing and getting all up in his brain, but look: she’s a telepath. They make a big deal out of her knowing “how everyone feels”, and immediately getting all up in young Cyclops’ brain the moment they meet. Girlfriend has had the misfortune of knowing about dudes and their dong applications for a very long time. Every time Scott Summers took himself in hand whilst genuflecting upon her the psychic ripples reached her. She can deal with these things by now. She has seen the beast and is numb to it. She can handle having the hairiest peen in the known x-universe hanging low before her while she tinkers with an animalman’s feral brainstuffs. Grow up, world. GET ON JEAN’S LEVEL.
(Otherwise maybe the platonic ideal of passable cinematic superwank; full of sound and fury signifying trailer beats; etc.)
Look, the only way to one-up The Warrior’s themed gangs is to also have themed neighborhoods. And also animal people.
It’s pretty shameful that Zootopia’s actual plot hinges on the protagonist not googling a term she’s not familiar with (among other, bizarrely unexplained police incompetence.) Also, although it covers unconscious bias pretty well for a cartoon for babies, is seems odd that we’re only told that prey animals can also be driven feral by whatever bullshit magic plant and never explicitly shown that. Although, I’m not sure that whole plot point works out super well because, it’s implied that it’s all chill at the end because it turned out that people were being intentionally poisoned, it still seems like a problem that it could happen in the first place, and, in a land of animal people, a giant predator going berserk is more of a problem than a tiny prey animal. I suppose, much like in fantasy literature, this is where the metaphor just breaks down.
It was brightly colored, upbeat, and way more coherent than Big Hero 6 so it was a decent enough time.
my zootopia review: The part where the little hamsters have their own tiny door to get in the train with made me laugh so hard I cried. A+ film, money well spent.
All I will say about Zootopia in this thread is that no, you seriously don’t play with anyone’s poofy, curly hair, that’s some fucked up shit, even as a passing joke in a Disney movie (and totally ignoring that predators are the minority in Zootopia’s crack-conspiracy analogue)
Again, I think it’s cool that Disney made a cartoon about and it’s one of the highest grossing movies of the year, because, well, Disney made a cartoon about institutionalized racism and drug conspiracies
Much how I have the opposite reaction to the Angry Birds movie apparently being an anti-immigration/refuge/Muslim thing (or that’s the reading I see being peddled about, at least)
Not nearly the best film I’ve seen, but the beginning of M is pretty effective for 1931 and it is probably worth watching the rest of the film from say right here. the inbetween 75 minutes is sort of lost on modern day because WE GET IT. We’ve seen the news, police, world circus that is a manhunt.
I had the joke to myself through out it that “Wow I can’t believe these people became Nazis!”
But yes the beginning actually made me unease and I think the final scene suddenly becomes cinema.
