i watched the movie gremlins for the first time in like 30 years and it’s very funny how they have to kill all the gremlins with heat attacks from yakuza kiwami 2

as someone who has watched gremlins 2 one billion times but had the original sort of fade from memory, i forgot that even this one is based on the sort of perfect looney tunes logic of gremlins immediately drinking and smoking and playing poker and video games and breakdancing and whatever is the funniest thing to see an evil puppet do

also the key and peele sketch g2 sketch made me forget that girl gremlins were not actually an invention of part 2

anyway this all makes the idea of the prequel cartoon where we are supposed to take the lore seriously even funnier

This jury office is showing the lady Ghostbusters movie and it’s letterboxed, but the electricity bolts and laser blasts and so forth flow off the frame into the letterbox and it is extremely distracting, I’ve never seen that choice made before.

They also turned off Hitch 5/6 of the way through with no explanation or apology and started a random Billy Crystal movie no one has ever watched or heard of so now I’ll never know if Albert and Allegra get together.

YouTube ads for movies have been doing this a lot lately to try to emphasize that they’re in imax or Dolby sensoround or whatever. Looks super weird but I’ve been wondering if theres something to be borrowed here for shoddy purposes.

I watched it last night and the dad was a detail I zeroed in on because as soon as he was referred to without being shown his absence in the first part of the film was conspicuous, and then when he finally appeared on-screen it felt like a ‘reveal’ that he was white and his wife and child were black, and I think he’s also the first male speaking part in the movie (one of three, along with the movie theater coworkers?), etc. etc. So I was really paying attention to the dad, but it still wasn’t until reading this post that I realized it was Fred Durst, and the revelation made me lol hard

“For me the film is both a celebration of the ways, when you’re young, because you need to to survive, you find these kind of coded symbols that make you feel less alone, but I think it’s also a cautionary tale of what happens in a culture and a world where those symbols are all we really have to tether us to ourselves.”

Does that say Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Is the symbol that tethers me to myself Paul Reubens doing a Vaudeville gag death scene?

unfortunately about 10% of buffy is landmark lesbian television but don’t worry whedon ruined that part too

For the record I didn’t actually like the movie or respect it all that much artistically, despite finding it moving and evocative due to reasons

Wonder where Jane came up with that one huh

Lost Highway + Pete and Pete is the sort of math I’m into.

For me, it’s Lost Highway + The Terminator + First Blood + Apocalypse Now + The Manchurian Candidate + The Bourne Identity = Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning

rewatched this for the first time since it came out, I still fucking love this doc and Kenny’s ornery ass rules (THE PARTY OF FIVE POEM) for their place of buisiness. nice to see the kids are still keeping it going today

‘I got a banana boat and put a banana in it and then pulled pork and coleslaw and called it a BBQ banana sundae, it’s like putting your dick in the wrong hole, there’s a thrill to it’

‘years of cooking has taught me if you cook too fast they leave and you have to cook again’

which brakhage movie is most on point for the paint-on-frame stuff

Whisper Of The Heart.

Really like how mundane and down to earth the movie is. Shots of characters doing really mundane stuff like closing a door to not make any noise, saying hello to a neighbor, etc.

Really thought this guy was going to be in more of the movie
