Watched the doom generation with friends at the local movie theater, what a fun movie with a horrifying, prescient ending
watched a 2020 columbo parody called “inspector ike” and they absolutely nailed the music and the mystery and goofy giallo stuff and every time it feels more naked gun-ish it really works. a shame they obviously didn’t have the budget for a film look. not the greatest flick but has to me the addictive and hypnotic feeling of a shot for shot amateur remake of something that does not exist
michael b jordan directing his first movie made the most visually interesting boxing fight scene anyone has ever done because he’s an anime nerd
Watched Ambulance. It was very intensely a Michael Bay film even though it did not include the Bay Shot.
I tried to watch Bunraku last night and I’m not sure if it was a bad execution of a good idea or just a bad idea but I could not stay awake. It made me want to rewatch Tears of the Black Tiger instead.
I watched these twin Italian twist-em-up detective mysteries: The Girl in the Fog (2017) and Into the Labyrinth (2019). Available now on Kanopy, the streaming video service you access with your library card.
They are written and directed by pulp novelist Donata Carrisi and both star Toni Servillo. The gimmick is that they each have a big movie star attached, that was flown out to work for a day, so that they can be put on the thumbnail image. Some real airport paperback stuff. I…keep thinking about them. I liked them.
The second one has these very striking Remastered In Unreal Engine 5 CG exterior shots. The vehicle driving ones feature big neon signs on the repeating-geometry buildings that say, like, “BAR”.
It also has a baby’s-first-Saw situation throughout. Not really my thing, not what I’m looking for. But it is fairly silly, not really any gore, etc. In her darkest hour, the lady does take of sip of brown toilet water, though.
At one point there is a dramatic shot of this lady, shot from above looking down, crawling on the floor, reaching out her hand to a centrally framed and spot-lit glowing cardboard box of take-out ‘P I Z Z A’, she slowly opens the box, revealing a fresh Neapolitan pie.
saw Across the Spider-Verse
i find it amusing that these sony cartoon spiderthings just straight up run circles around nearly everything else in the MCU or DCU or whatever the fuck else
the last live-action spider movie is fine i guess, but it’s an absolute sack of dogshit compared to these gems
the animation is mind-blowingly good, the themes are rich and well-executed, the music is great, everything lands narratively
now just gotta hold out til 2024 for the last film and hope it’s even remotely as good as the first two
smoked too much and fell asleep halfway thru the web-dl of the new kelly reichardt but i adored what i saw!!! feels like it takes place in a weird alternate universe where society has oriented itself around art school; i think itd be a fun double feature with crimes of the future. really adored the look of it… fuzzy digital that isnt actually trying to emulate film but which embraces extremely digital vibes (every shot is like perfectly white balanced for example)
ty for letting me know it’s out streaming, without rarbg I keep missing releases
1080 master gardener out there, I’m waiting for a 2160 though
jerry, I’m slippin’!
finally watched Stalker. It’s, uh, good? I’m certain nothing I say about it would be interesting. I’m just glad I watched it.
helll yeah! jordan cosplaying as ness is pretty qtpie
watched half of Cure but i wanted to show my friends so i turned it off
went to a nice little screening of severel of maya deren’s films on 16mm in the park. at one point a guy drove by blasting james brown’s the payback, during one of the silent shorts
I need to read this thread more, I missed the Popeye Appreciation Society’s meeting
Little Mermaid (2023) - I felt like I was going insane watching this because the first act feels like it’s an hour long, but the third act is as long as it was in the original
Which is bad because the remake is nearly an hour longer
I don’t even think the second act was the bulk of the movie, Rob Marshall takes his goddamn time setting up the plot
Wasn’t Poor Unfortunate Souls written for the original but cut? Maybe they cut it for a reason
Also they cut the song and scene about Sebastian getting chased by the chef and I take this personally
(I had to be angry about something since I don’t care that Ariel is black - I’m brown, brown mermaids can get it - or everything they did to Scuttle)
I also have issues with the choreography of some of the numbers and the mixing or other decisions? Backup vocals are really muted in Under the Sea and almost completely gone in Kiss the Girl and
Kiss the Girl in the original movie is this opulent number, bright colors, tons of stuff happening and here it’s just Sebastian doing 95% of the work and the color grading is “no this night scene isn’t dark enough”
I didn’t hate it, which puts it in the top 3 of the live action remakes, a very low bar to clear
