i’ve never seen a michael mann movie before today but i have seen 2 fast 2 furious so miami vice (2006) may as well be the sistine chapel. i could watch it without dialogue and understand it completely which is fortunate because everyone is laconic and the accent work is spotty

On that note: Not that it’s a movie that needs defending in any way, but when I stop and think about it, I’d rather rewatch 2 Fast 2 Furious than any of the last few Fast movies.

(Only seen the first episode of Miami Vice, good use of Phil Collins.)

lol, I don’t remember whether I ever followed up on this, but I did end up watching Thief and Heat and I liked both a lot. I really want to see Blackhat and Manhunter but haven’t gotten around to them yet.

BTW I just saw How to Blow Up a Pipeline. I was really worried about this movie, because:

But whatever influence their technical advisor had, the movie didn’t feel like an op. It felt like legitimately good agitprop that represented the arguments from the original book reasonably well. I enjoyed it a lot, would recommend. It was an effective thriller with a great ensemble cast of different sorts of environmental activists from different backgrounds with different well-drawn motivations.

you should know I’ve been using the phrase “Punished Crockett” ever since you coined it in reference to colin feral in true dick season 2

I watched Knock at the Cabin as it is on Peacock and I only have that for another month or two. Only cared to watch it for Batista and he was good in it so that made it a successful venture, movie itself was a decent mid-level horror/thriller thing, not sure if it’ll make a lick of sense if I spend any time thinking about it so I’m gonna choose not to.

The more I think about How to Blow Up a Pipeline, the more shocked I am that the movie actually wholeheartedly endorses its protagonists and their actions. So many movies that depict radical action like this hook you and titillate you with the property destruction but keep the protagonists at an emotional remove and treat their actions as immoral or misguided. Did anyone see Nocturama? That’s the worst example of that kind of thing I can think of. I’m so relieved this movie didn’t hit me with that kind of bullshit.

i think this one would have more staying power if it took more inspiration from Parasite than it does already. the owner’s occultism is cute but it doesn’t really go anywhere or leave as much impression as his oppressive wealth (e.g. the evil smart home devices) and vaguely conceited art (vs defoe turning his whole suite into an art piece, which is the most fun part of the movie). the ambiguous and “would that be fucked up or what” elements aren’t as compelling as the spite. hollywood is still trying to catch up to Sex House…

I’m halfway through the staggering work of cinema known as Popeye. I’m starting to fall asleep due to my subtle narcolepsy, but I’m loving every moment

I saw the DnD movie, which seemed like the kind of movie you’d catch on cable on a Sunday afternoon. It was actually enjoyable, I liked a lot of the fantasy scenery, and the characters all seemed to do shit a DnD party would do in order to get around impossible obstacles by abusing the game items they had. I feel like Joss Whedon Dialog has infected every part of movies now and it’s here in the DnD movie but I can ignore it. Hugh Grant looks like a gun is pointing at him just out of frame in every scene he’s in so it’s very funny to imagine he did this film under duress. It feels like The Order 1886 of videogames where everyone in the production is extremely competent at their craft.

As someone who grew up in Michigan in the 80s, I’m contractually obligated to love all things Evil Dead, and Rise was no exception.

I laughed out loud at The Shining shot, but I could see someone really hating that.

As a multimedia archival tech I do have to cry foul about that transcription disc not playing inside out though.
