if i was a hiring manager and the guy i’m interviewing pulled out a grenade i would simply not hire him

smoking causes coughing is a lot of fun. went in expecting a tokusatsu parody but instead the offbeat comedy horror anthology style of it that mostly ignores the power rangers stuff accidentally(?) makes it closer to just being actual tokusatsu. great weird practical effects and sets and cartoony gore. the kind of sex jokes that you would expect from a french comedy are…there, less than usual i guess but they are there

see you can’t just drop people in the deep end of high level late period michael mann like this, we’ve seen this happen before with onesecondbefore when they watched collateral and you all were like “gotta check out miami vice next!” no! I tried suggesting manhunter instead based on what they said about collateral and look what happened, they hated miami vice, which I knew was coming.

the fed guy says dc and every local agency except miami pd was in on the op that was compromised so that’s why he comes to them, before that he also had them look at some photo and they go on about go fast boats and skill sets and their boss looks at the fed with a classic “didn’t I tell you these guys knew their shit so are you going to let them in on this or what” look. and they want in because 1) the action is the juice, which we know because their jobs are undercover drug busts and 2) the guys they’re after just killed an informant of theirs and his whole family and they seemed friendly with him. I’m only explaining this part to explain the whole movie is like this: crystal clear to me, on my 373rd viewing in a lifetime of mann studies, vague obtuse bullshit about skillsets and go fast boats to anyone else.

That’s why you don’t run an international drug smuggling ring

One thing I will say, or rather reiterate after I said it after we watched Miami Vice near the end of the last meetup and made Felix scream his head off that it was too loud like an alcoholic dad: even Mann can’t rehabilitate nu metal.

there’s a segment of the sb mann studies group that doesn’t seem to think too highly of some of mann’s musical selections and I find this troubling

i watched the seven-minutes-longer version which apparently cut the skill set line, maybe that would have made me like it more. plus it’d be seven minutes shorter. who is to say :clod:

Seijun Suzuki’s “A Tale of Sorrow and Sadness” is one of the best movies about misogyny I’ve ever seen, also the perils of athletic wear sponsorships. Would make for a good double feature with Ben Affleck’s shoe movie

Haley I am silent about it but I am also a Miami Vice Hater and have tried watching it multiple times because of this forum and every time I just start vibrating in my seat at every moment of it.

Thank You for your service.

I swear every director’s cut of mann’s has something that makes me briefly wonder if he actually knows anything about movies at all. and this is the one we’re going to be stuck with on uhd!

i watched the miami vice movie before i watched the show and i fucking hated it then i watched the show and its my second favorite mann now after manhunter, and its literally becuase of what haley said. like who the fuck are these guys? but then you spend five fucking seasons with them and its like shit they’re the only dudes for the job. and i mean, those WERE the hit singles of the 2000s!

made me think of this though this is an extreme case of not understanding michael mann (it’s about Heat I just spoilered it because haley might watch it)

ok @parker what mann thing do i watch next if the one i liked was The Insider

likes Insider dislikes Miami Vice, you might be better off asking daphny than me. If I wanted to make the bold choice here I’d want to think that’s prime viewing conditions for Ali, you’re thrown into a section of muhammad ali’s life the way miami vice suddenly throws you into a crockett and tubbs life without explanation but also you just watched miami vice so your mind might be more receptive to it, and it’s about a guy going against the institution but the institution is america’s dehumanization of black people. the easy safe coward answer is: girls love Last of the Mohicans. that and heat and insider are all in that 90s big budget awards bait era of mann’s that feels safe to recommend.

i really liked collateral

TV Miami Vice was the only one for me. It’s this weird time capsule thing and modernizing it doesn’t ever feel right.

yeah I’m overthinking it I should of just said collateral

Thief could work too if what you gravitated towards in The Insider and Heat was the technical storytelling that Mann is really good at (it’s my favorite Michael Mann movie and also my favorite James Cann movie). Also The Tangerine Dream score rips.

Is it true that the directors cut of Miami Vice that was on streaming/released to DVD doesn’t open with Numb/Encore? Terrible choice if so.

the keep is also great if you wanna see where they got neu wolfenstein from

like the movie itself doesn’t fully work but it’s one of those cultural linking books that has been all-but-deleted from most people’s maps

i have never seen the miami vice show but i do love the movie… but yeah imo it is better as a mann 200-level thing… def really worth watching collateral first and maybe a spread of cop movies like to live and die in la and then revisiting it
