Noticed « Monster Hunter » featured prominently during Tar’s opening credits, thought about it for 40 minutes but then forgot about it. Beautiful

You People has all the same strengths and problems as everything else kenya barris makes i suppose, like a handful of really sharp jokes and well drawn characters and smart observations but limited by formula and general hollywood rich man out of touchness. in this case it it compounded by romantic comedy template. eddie murphy and julia louis dreyfuss are mostly wasted as one note obstacle characters but they get in a couple good jokes. david duchovny singing john legend to relate to black folks and a running gag about his obsession with xzibit is mildly funnier. they really just got sam jay in her doing her stand up and her riffing with jonah hill is funnier than most of the script. although it is very bizarre to start with like a “barack obama does coke to do gay stuff” run to start your kind of mild romcom. mike epps has a fun bizarre run about making a Tron themed wedding that is funnier because it falls a little flat both in universe and onscreen. jonah hill and lauren london basically have at best “fun roomate” chemistry. they try to pack a bunch of intimacy and romance into their initial dating montage but for the rest of the movie it’s pretty mid. they kiss like twice. they’re fine. i refuse to believe that she would be encouraging this man to quit his job in finance to become a professional podcaster. the ending is pretty wild too. after the out of touch black muslim and white jewish parents destroy their engagement, several months later they trick them both into meeting and apologize to both of them before surprising them by revealing that they have invited all of their friends and family to a Secret Surprise Wedding with a rabbi and an imam. again, just springing this on them. which i guess is normal for romantic comedy logic but still wild in practice

pleased that avatar 2 has revealed the na’vis’ bodies light up with sparkly dots when suffering an epileptic seizure, i look forward to whatever medical anatomical insights james cameron has in store for the next one

My wife just wrote an article for a neurology magazine about how the seizure in Avatar 2 is bad

I want to read an article about that scene of al swearengen passing a kidney stone through his urethra

ooo my favorite part of hells kitchen season 1 is when the guy passes kidney stones and carries them around in a napkin to show everyone that he wasn’t faking (he was doing shitty on service cuz of the pain) and they all were unimpressed cuz the stones were so small BUT THE PAIN OF PUSHING ONE OF THOSE THROUGH YOUR KIDNEY AND URETHRA IS GIGANTIC I was amazed people blew it off, that guy must have stunk in too many other ways for them not to care at all. that or they have no urethral imagination

Yeah the deadwood scene was so horrible that it made me legit afraid of kidney stones

The Culprit Hanzawa (Netflix) is fun to watch so far, and even reminded me of Astro Fighter Sunred — i.e. high praise for a spinoff series, esp. considering that the other Conan-spinoff series fell flat on its face for me.

who knew that alexis kanner wrote directed and starred alongside patrick mcgoohan in a hostage thriller??? that got die hard sued for being a rip off of??? not me til today. im sorry that my review is in the form of fanfiction. i cant help it. you should like it so my fanfiction can be under the ‘popular reviews’ section on the movies page though

ITS TRUE THOUGH HOLY SHIT THIS MOVIE IS WEIRD AS FUCK AND its on youtube. some of the conversation exchanges in this movie had me SCREAMING. having watched that not-seinfeld on twitch also kinda skewed the ways i processed dialogue. its weird, its such a weird movie. im hollering. the cover doesnt spoil how ridiclous mcgoohans sideburns are either, which is a treat

oh also justin trudeaus mom is patrick mcgoohans wife

i take everything back that i said about musicals. they’re great as long as its two men locked in a room singing at eachother with the same intensity that charlotte rampling eats jam in the night porter. patrick is the nightporter and alexis is the jam here, in my analogy that makes total sense

not fully onboard with this rating (3.5 i can agree w/),

but true and valid point made here, and don’t even get me started on intrinsic functions like ASLR, TRIM or garbage collection, DMA and all the fancy bells&whistles an OS brings to the EXCEL table :smirk:

Watched Foodfight, again, for some reason. This film is full of so many terrible one liners, shots, shitty models and animations. God.

Spent $4 on Shudder to watch Skinamarink, here’s my thoughtful review:

“It’s supposed to be like a kid’s nightmare” yeah OK I get that, that aspect works, it’s the “let’s look at the top of door frames and night lights for two goddamn hours” that lost me. It’d probably be a killer 15, maybe half hour short, but there’s not nearly enough meat on them bones to justify this.

You may be amused to learn that the director’s YouTube page contains pretty much exactly what you are thinking of, but MUCH cornier in every imaginable regard

I think a lot of people are saying “watch this alone in the dark! For the true experience!!” But I was glad to have watched it with my husband so we could just talk out loud about it during all the dead air sections

I watched Tar, thought the ending was kinda funny but didn’t completely understand it, went to google and then guffawed.

Not sure what I thought of Infinity Pool. I did the thing I try to never do where I started to try to anticipate where it was going like I was on a Lost message board, and I don’t know if that’s on me or on the movie.

No one in the theater got up in the middle and announced it was a good movie to help me out.

finally watched Kairo/Pulse, the j-horror cult classic everyone has been telling me for years that I would love, and I did not entirely love it!! Which I feel very bad about.

The movie has some super super powerful stuff in it and is absolutely beautifully shot–so many scenes that achieve a level of ominous dread simply from the way the characters hold their bodies and stand in relation to one another. Whenever one character turns their back on another, you’re dead terrified something horrible will happen. Great stuff.

And the way the ghosts work as a metaphor for the horror of not knowing whether your friends are OK, the blind fear you can have when you know that someone you care about is not doing well, retreating into a dark room within themselves… And the fear that you’re unable to help them, even when they have the strength to tell you what’s going on… god, that’s good. I see a lot of people talking about how this is a film about the internet making you lonely but to me the internet themeing felt a lot more like fun flavor than something really essential to the horror. I saw it much more as a movie about how scary it is to not be able to help your friends when they have suicidal ideation.

Partially, that’s because almost none of the characters who enter the forbidden rooms seem to learn to do so on the internet. Most of them seem to catch a sort of depression contagion ambiently, through curiosity about their friends who have also been afflicted, and a sort of innocent absence on the part of the friends they still have left to protect them. The story seemed to me to be much more about how difficult it is to protect the people you love from things you cannot see or understand. As they come closer to one another, their failures to protect one another hurt more and more. I dunno. It’s great stuff.

But when the plane exploded and the characters got into the luxury italian speedboat, I was SO FUCKING MAD oh my god. I admire the idea of doing a ghost apocalypse but this is not the execution I wanted to see. I wanted to see more shit like the incredible scene in the abandoned arcade, or the scene where Michi goes into the konbini. I wanted to see more shit like the incredible Final Ghost. I did not want to see planes exploding! Oh my god. Cannot express how angry the plane made me lmao. The final sequence after the warehouse feels to me like the worst possible execution of the themes the story could have possibly ended up with.

I love Cure though so I was glad to see another movie where Kiyoshi Kurosawa makes me feel like I’m gonna die simply from how a dude is standing in a room
