First Cow is definitely a mumblecore western. I was thinking of that as one of the things that would qualify, but weirdly I think the PNW setting also kind of distinguishes it. I would still consider it an alt western as it deals with a lot of the same themes as other westerns, but because it lacks shootouts and new sheriffs in town or whatever i think it qualifies.
There Will Be Blood also came to mind when I was thinking about this, but I think the same argument could be made that it keeps a lot of the essential thematic DNA of the Western
What amazes me is that no one has recently attempted to do a movie set in the wild west but done almost entirely from the perspective of native american characters. I feel like there have been some attempts in the not so distant past but nothing in the past 20 years or so? I think about this a lot when watching stuff like First Cow or The Sisters Brothers, movies that seem like they are really interested in creating a more nuanced and sort of humanistic understanding of the setting/period, but still relegate native characters to basically like background roles. It’s pretty bizarre

jarmusch movies are actually always perfect for this sort of activity because increasingly every single one of them can be loosely described within some kind of understood genre parameters, but then the movies always end up just being jim jarmusch movies

yeah it’s a favorite of mine, i watch it like once a year anyway. i’m fond of Jim Jarmusch Movies a lot in general but only to a certain limit, except dead man is the one that transcends that. maybe ghost dog’s close

i know people are probably excited about this but the energy of the way this trailer is cut combined with like what is actually happening in it is so funny to me
like imagine seeing this and not knowing it was a prequel to something
i have big confidence in david chase that will not be shaken under any circumstances, of course, but that trailer has got to be fuckin jokin my eyeballs man what in the hell

Yeah I think it’s more a revisionist western or even like a parody I guess. It leans in to too many western tropes esp because it’s about two “outlaws.” I’m guessing the book was real good, because I found the movie pretty underwhelming despite having a ridiculously good cast. Some parts of it worked for me but it wasn’t really funny at all, and the serious parts all felt kind of half assed.
I do think the general idea of two rugged outlaw types ending up in San Francisco is a good premise but that was only a small part of the movie and they didn’t really do anything with it. I feel like a movie based entirely on that idea would be a pretty good non-western western. Like the first act is all about cattle rancher or whatever, then he gets on a train and the rest of the movie just takes place in old timey San Francisco. It’s weird to think about those two worlds coexisting. Maybe he could meet a weird old timey gold miner guy who also gets lost in the city.
