posting mainly because of a classic “Well that just happened”, when you see who gets to say it you’ll shit!
Why does the “traditional animation” part look like such ass
because that part is all done with keyframes and shaders like 3D animation is nowadays (at higher budgets they literally draw over parts of every few frames to add noise and perceived authenticity, in between the modelling pass and the raster pass) and I’m assuming that WB doesn’t have any kind of pipeline for doing that kind of 2D work at film scale currently so this is effectively their first try
stepping through frame by frame, here’s what I think:
Absolutely lifeless poses, probably stemming from how they’re clearly just rotoscoping over 3d assets, with any additional effects not quite selling the traditional animation.
Like look at those little smears and how disconnected they feel from Taz. Then look at how… little of a reaction any character has to what’s happening on screen. It’s all like this, just stiff poses
This is a pretty good smear on yosemite sam
but its followed up with this stiff drawing
that just makes the two frame movement seem enervating rather than cartoonish.
There’s also like… little to no secondary motion in any of these frames, yosemite sam’s moustache barely moves through the entire sequence.
There’s one last oddity about the animation that I can only attribute to slavish imitation of the disney pipeline: the characters aren’t animated with respect to each other. It’s like every character has their own team of animators working in isolation and all the characters are composited together at the end.
There are a lot of sequences in this trailer where one character moves on one frame, and then another character moves on frame 2, and they alternate like that, leading to a sort of disjointed/out-of-sync feeling.
I could go on for like another thousand words with this analysis but there are limits to even my desire to revel in pedantry.
PS the atrocious coloring and shading don’t help anything.
not that they were produced at the same time or by the same arm of the octopus but its wild that the current looney tunes tv show on hbo looks higher budget than these things that look like they are in the background of a “funny” insurance commerical
I don’t leave the house for a year and they make another movie here! The street shot at 1:03 is right behind my old apartment and is the same block they shot some exteriors from Hung on. We watched them from out our back window.
the trailer for the new jurassic park movie is only playing in movie theaters, which feels pretty on the nose for a franchise all about how the folly of attempting to use science to control forces of nature and the ability of harmful species to thrive against all odds
Not sure if this is the place to post about old movies getting a new release, but I just found out that Feherlofia / Son of the White Mare has gotten a 4k restoration and Blu Ray release:

two things i love about it:
between this and that urban horse movie it feels like idris elba just decided he wanted to be a cowboy and the entire industry just welcomed and accommodated that. oh also the dark tower
it seems specifically designed to make quentin tarantino furiously jealous
wish it had any visual identity whatsoever but it’s always nice to see new westerns being made
I felt that way at first, but as the trailer went on the costumes especially started looking more interesting to me. In a weird way it feels like a throwback to that like Young Guns era of western where everyone’s look is in a weird blurry area in between contemporary fashion and “authentic” garb. At this point I’m kind of tired of the dusty worn out look most new westerns have, any gestures towards actual “realism” feel like such affectations anyway.
I want a western where everyone dresses like orville peck but that probably won’t happen.
If you can’t make a great western set on a space station then you know neither filmmaking nor westerns.
it is a fun genre and there could always be more, but i feel like we have had enough movies that treat “Western” as a cinematic genre that can exist independently of a particular historical setting. i would be more interested at this point in seeing movies that take place in the “wild west” setting, yet are cinematically as far removed from the “Western” genre as possible. what would that even look like?
A non-western western would probably end up as poverty porn of some stripe or other, like all those dramatic-literary movies that take place in the extended Flannery O’Connorverse

i mean it depends on how generalized you think about the western genre. how far afield from the tropes we’re talking about are comedy musicals like paint your wagon or seven brides for seven brothers. are we just talking about stuff without crime/gunslingers? because tv westerns were big enough that a show like bonanza can just be about like a pie eating contest or a real estate dispute or something or you have shows like little house on the prarie or dr. quinn medicine woman that do things outside of the general gunslinger/crime concept
