MON HUNTERS thread

http://www.capcom-unity.com/monster_hunter/blog/2018/03/14/monster-hunter-world-first-free-major-title-update-introduces-deviljho-spring-blossom-fest-and-more

We got updates incoming. They’re actually releasing a way to re-edit your hunter but won’t let your name, palico’s name or palico’s appearance. It’s nice to finally get this in monhun but kind of a drag the name is some kind of unchangeable string. Is it saved in some kind of ridgid network database? I thought that’s what PSNID/Gamertag was for. Oh well, any step forward I guess.

gaijin hunter has a nice recap of the livestream, lots of good stuff:

lots and lots of buffs to most weapons too!

The Handler’s spring outfit looks cute! Could do without the Handler, though.

Apparently, I’ve spent 6 hours trying to create a character.

I want to make a clone of the lady with the black hair and green outfit from the intro. She’s so cool.

I’m trying to decide on either the dual blades or the bow, but I still need to try out the Insect Glaive.

(Playing PS4 games on a monitor is giving me bad memories of playing Dead Rising on a CRT, I can’t read shit).

Did something happen to the SB Session? It disappeared from my list.

apparently you get kicked after a month of inactivity. it’s not quite clear how they determine that, though

on the ps4? I was active on it like three days ago.

I think the settings allow one to change subtitle size? not menu size, though, beh.

deviljho is out, and indeed seems to have slotted into bazelgeuse’s role too?

I do love how he now provides a bit of symmetry- great jagras and kulu-ya-ku as earliest monsters that can change fight modes by picking up prey and rocks can now be picked up by a latest late monster for his own hitbox-extending. still, while he’s picked up a few tricks he’s inexplicably missing from the weird tempered system (unless they actually use that as an excuse to make Variants make sense) so he’s not quite fixing the postgame grind, oh well.

apparently at GDC there was [NOT A LEAK, a rejected trial attempt, rip ;_;]

which… would make a surprising amount of sense skeleton-wise, [not sure why they didn’t go with it eventually]. I’m wasting podcast material here since it’d be good discussion, but it also avoids me talking out loud for five minutes on a list, so. in total, the leviathan model gives one early-game fight and three high-tier fights (royal ludroth; lagiacrus, agnaktor, mizutsune; honestly there’s no chance for either bigmouth) by itself.

in comparison to other ones:
  • longdrake: 2.5 postgame fights (fatalis x3, dire miralis). needing at minimum three new arenas sounds comically implausible, though.

  • crab: 1 earlygame fight, one lategame fight (daimyo, shogun). as much as the crabs are lovely this is comically short, but it would have made for a good pairing with the use of the fish.

  • ape: two earlygame fights, one midgame fight, one endgame fight (kecha wacha, congalala; blagonga; rajang). honestly, while I love rajang and he’d make for a great last-tier tempered fight as a vastly different fight from the elders, this suffers hard from the fact that congalala is too cartoonish and dumb for World’s realism and how Blagonga has no tundra to appear in.

  • pseudo-wyvern: 2.5 mid-game fights, 2.5 lategame fights, 2 postgame fights (gigginox, lucent / silverwind / narga; barioth, molten / tigrex; akantor, ukanlos). this would actually make most sense content-wise if not for the slight issue of being nearly cut in half due to the distinct absence of any tundra in the game as half of them need. there’s also relatively little chance those rare subspecies would get the regular subspecies placement they need. still, it’ll probably be most logical after Leviathan, or for the g-rank expansion adding in that logical absence.

  • upright ursine: 3 earlygame fights (azuros, lagombi, volvidon). no good for updates for people at the end of the game, sadly, and again the tundra issue cuts out one. there’s extremely little chance deviants will get used again considering how extra-anime they are, but even if they were used I actually don’t like the earlier monster deviants too much for horribly abusing distancing status effects like wind and tremors and snowman, so.

  • insectlike: two earlygame fights, one midgame fight (seltas / queen, nerscylla). while these are some of the best monsters in the series and provide the most for the staggeringly absent, again, it’d take a lot to make them make much sense.

  • six-limbed non-insect: no g-rank and extreme limits on arena-specific final bosses means this is just one midgame fight and an endgame fight, sigh.

all the other fourth-gen skeletons (froglike, snake, giant herbivore) provide two or less each; if there’s one thing I loathe about 4U, it’s how many stunted branches that generation had in terms of educational skeleton-ascent.

honestly, the previous fake speculation of using more elder dragons for subspecies and a better essentially-final boss in lunastra / oroshi kirin / alatreon sounded best to me here, but whatevers. if I had my own choices for these not-quite-top-tier monsters I’d actually want the chicken model to get its best representatives in the series with Seregios and Astalos next, or freeing a number of arena-specific old final bosses as terribly mmo as that is to provide more postgame variety (the fixed-up fatalis, amatsu, gogmazios, nakarkos, atoraru ka) and literally any better particularly giant monster than Zorah and Xeno.

Is there actually a good giant monster in the series?

Akantor, Ukanlos, Alatreon, Amatsu (spiky-humpback quadruped-dragon fire / ice edition, all-elements big four-legged elder dragon, flying armed whale) make for a very solid old quartet (and p3rd / gen postgame) of fights of just “regular old-endgame monsters that fight a little slower than normal and happen to be extra dramatic and big”- like, about a little taller and a ways wider than the average Deviljho. They usually get kills despite reduced speed by staying in 2HKO territory numberswise, but they’re still far more aggressive and varied than Xeno ever is.

The mountain-sized monsters one used to climb on were better in the third and fourth generation iterations- the Mohran family of sand-whales one sails alongside, the Dalamadurs as mountain-wrapping lindwurms. They were still gimmick fights, but going onto the monster was more of a temporary window than a mountainmaze entirety, and they had good regular repositioning. Admittedly, they were still kinda fixed and reliant on homing shots from above, and there’s only one time the whale was ever any scary by spawning directly beside the barrier in 4U G-rank while the snake was targetting people who didn’t learn panic-dives or continuing to lay on the ground after being knocked away, but staying away from making the monster itself a non-reactionary sprawling arena helped a fair bit.

Shout-outs to Atoraru-Ka, which alternates between giant-monster phases (webbed-up-debris mechadrake) and an actually difficult regular-monster phase (the weapon-scraps-slinging mantis piloting it).

Man, I hated hated hated the sand dragon guy in 3U, I just could not do enough damage in time. Carting is one thing, but hitting a 60 minute time limit where you’re mostly loading cannonballs is an awful feeling.

The Mohran’s are usually only 30 minutes. They are a slog solo but I do enjoy them with 4 people. There’s alot of team coordinating to do. There’s a bit more going on than the Zora Magdaros hunt.

yeah i do think mohran is the closest they’ve gotten. lots of different jobs - cannons, turrets, binder, gong, dragonator, climbing the back, plenty of stuff to break, two very different phases. it would take some work for it to actually be, like, a good hunt, but it’s sort of hilarious how awful zorah magdaros is by comparison, they sort of fucked that up imo

yeah i was also gonna post about that clan issue, i’ve noticed notifications that people dropped from the squad the last few times i got on. at first i was like what the hell! though yeah i guess it seems to be a timed thing, which is weird and bad. anyone playing regularly that wants in/back in the squad definitely hit me up

in case any of y’all ever wanted to see what nergi looks like with, like, all of its spikes broken off

i’ve gotten to the nerg fight in the story but whenever i’ve had time to play games lately i’m like, “man i don’t wanna do something stressful” and i keep putting it off.

i’ve never played monster hunter, there’s so many menus within menus. i can’t figure out how to invert the controls when using the bow, which will determine whether or not i bother with the bow.

i can’t figure out how to make the lady in green.
monhungreen
why can’t she be my handler?
:heart_eyes_cat::heart_eyes_cat::heart_eyes_cat::heart_eyes_cat:

(i accidentally made quiet a few times. if you use the round blush you can make some good red, kind of puffy eyes)

It makes me feel really bad to see this adorable cat in an even more adorable inflatable raft getting slapped around by a dinosaur.

update: i beat nergigante!

i need low rank tobi parts to build a weapon that i actually have all of parts for to build the next upgrade, i guess i should’ve hunted more of them in LR. i don’t have any investigations for LR tobi now.

i hope they add some filter and sorting options for managing investigations, it’s the only part of the game that feels like sifting through trash.
