semi-related, and i don’t know if this is just a uk thing, but once-venerable pinball manufacturer bally is now a gambling website that advertises on youtube constantly.

every time I enter a Taito arcade, I remind myself that if someone pays more money, they are always ready to immediately sell hog bristles again, cherish this moment. (it doesn’t seem surprising that bally which a company has long relied on the mob now shift its business to online gambling…)

no that’s just the history of Bally
also they were making pinball tables long enough that their early tables as it existed would have been seen as gambling under US law, so it’s never not been gambling

documentary ‘Tilt!’ about Williams is funny cuz the arc is
- Williams gets huge with pinball buys Bally
- Midway gets spun off as video games but pinball stays w/ slots becasue its more profitable than slots and also provides like IPs, assets, etc. that the slots can use
- Slots starts blowing up and altho they’re #1 pinball isnt successful ‘enough’ relative to slots, everyone pressured to pull together to make a big success to save pinball dept.
- They succeed but it still looks better on balance sheet /to investors to just have huge slot company vs. huge slot company + pretty good pinball company and they all get shut down & fired anyways.

saw this in a trailer several months ago and thought it looked neat. there have been a few different games that have combined pinball with more adventure/search action types of games, but i think it’s always a potentially compelling combo.
