methods of input (Part 2)

F for Fun! = D

Oh shoot check the inputs on that baby

Ooh I was gonna post a video of the games but the hangman game really freaked me out. Such a wholesome-looking color palette too.

steam controller allegedly $99

do I wish it was less than a hundo? yeah

do I think 99 bucks is a bad price? not particularly, no. it looks iffy if you compare it to overstuffed Chinese controllers but there’s still enough to make it worth it, especially if it gets the same kind of availability of repair parts like the Deck does

$99 sucks because that means it won’t be widely adopted which means touchpad-first controls will never take off.

Though if it was free I still would highly doubt we’d get a lot of touchpad controller games… everything would still cater to dual shock format. So :man_shrugging:

Trying to find a handheld keyboard with an independent Fkey row and tons of cursed options.

ps1 card game with special controllers that have embedded screens to show each player’s hand privately, like sonic shuffle on dreamcast

When I was a kid we only had one real VMU so when we played Sonic Shuffle one player just didn’t know what their cards were.

I keep seeing dual shock 4 style controllers around with low latency etc. I never see them with a brand I recognize…. But has anyone else tried any of these out? Is there a way I can figure that out?

Saw this guy a few days ago and I want to see the process of the clearly one guy in a garage making these. What a niche to fill.

I have been wishing for this for years!

I’d been bemoaning the fact that I was stuck with mouse controls for GOG’s DOSBOX Links 386 Pro, and it took me two weeks to realize oh right I can use DS4Windows to have my DualSense act like a mouse, and not with the touchpad but with an analogue stick.

And I was still being bone-headed with it for a while because you can tell DS4W to use a mouse-like template to start from for a new profile…but none of the controls except the darn fiddly touchpad move the mouse. Some template. ‘p’ Took me a while to realize that oh I have to go in and map an analog stick’s four directions to the four little arrows around the sides of the mouse diagram in the controls mapping window. And then mess with various slider type things to get the movement under control.

Seems to work pretty well. Sweet. I wonder what other mouse games I can play now. I suppose pretty much anything where you don’t need super-fast or super-accurate clicking, or just tons of clicking on stuff all over the screen. So like a golf game is fine. (If only that late T&E Soft Windows golf game wasn’t $uper rare or something. ; D) What else? Hmm…

I had been using my majestouch 2 ninja at work, but it’s safe at home now. It’s disappointing that Filco boards fell out of favor for mostly misguided reasons. They were purist’s keyboards that eschewed features like hot swapping for better ergonomics, construction quality, and reliability. It’s easier to get a keychron or ducky board exactly how you want it, but you might end up worse off.

Steam Input works as well, even with a DOSBOX game from GOG. I suppose that’s probably the surer way forward since Ryochan7 stopped updating DS4Windows and I’m not sure how reliable the various people who’ve taken his code are with it, and anyway it doesn’t have broad controller support.

I have a weirdly specific desire for which I haven’t been able to find anything. I was wondering if maybe the input method knowers here on SB might have an idea I didn’t think of.

Context: my car has a really badly designed input method. It’s a kind of pseudo-touchpad, roughly 3 inches by 3 inches, to the right of the shifter. You mostly don’t use it to control a cursor, rather, it’s basically an incredibly indirect d-pad where in order to move left/right/up/down you have to do directional swipes. The algorithm is terrible and it’s hard to swipe in an exact direction without looking, so after 7 years of driving this car I’m still doing wrong inputs like a third of the time.

I almost always use this to interact with a phone plugged in with USB CarPlay and pretty much only use the car’s built-in interface twice a year to change daylight savings time mode (which it ought to do automatically, but anyway). So I was thinking a nice “upgrade” to my car would be to duct-tape a superior input device on top of it, which I could then connect directly to my phone.

My ideal requirements for this input device would be:

  • Fits in this 3-inch-by-3-inch space
  • Can be interacted with with one hand without looking
  • Sends directional inputs to CarPlay or Android Auto
  • Doesn’t need to be fiddled with every time to turn it on or connect it (that probably rules out bluetooth-only controllers)

In my imagination it looks like a miniature HitBox with 5 buttons (4 directional, one action). But this does not seem to exist. Failing that, a joystick-based controller might also work, but those also tend to be large and elaborate. Any ideas?

soooo if i were you i would try hooking up a USB Keyboard to your phone to see if the arrow keys + enter do anything, then get something like this:

maybe? maybe.

Mi immediate thought was

But youd need a cubby to store it in.
And a wii nunchuck to usb adapter.
Or an arduino solution.

My second thought is the sort of industrisl joystick used on farm equipment and in factories. These can work with canbus (car networking standard) and might actually just work as a direct replacement but that would require some very in depth information about your existing interface. They are also expensive but would stand up to car temp swings and direct sunlight. But im pretty sure youre not trying to read white papers and cut up your center console.

Im mostly just using this as an excuse to read and post about industrial interfaces…
