I’m guessing it’s designed this way to have feedback on where a cardinal is? Then again, it’s not like people rest their thumbs on the dpad while playing, right?
I’m curious about it just because I like disc dpads. I’d give it a whirl

I parsed that thing as a PlayStation style segmented dpad the first dozen times I saw that picture. Realizing it’s a disc is a major psychic relief.

i saw it in a magazine as a kid, and even then i thought that the muscle memory someone would already have built playing resident evil on a regular controller would nullify any help this weird layout might have provided

I think maybe they’ve been pretty good for a while, but I got myself one of those more recent neon pink Xbox controllers back in December and have been using it to play stuff on my Steam Deck when hooked up to a TV (I use an 8Bitdo wired Xbox controller on PC), and…damn, it is a pretty good controller, huh?
I mean I played plenty of Xbox One stuff with some Xbox One era controllers, and even though they’re almost the same, these new ones are almost certainly better. I can’t really say what or how.
I mean, I don’t mind using the wired 8Bitdo on my PC since I’m usually sitting at my desk for that, but there’s just something meatier to the real deal controller. Real good clickiness to those face buttons.
