methods of input (Part 2)

I have almost bought that so many times!

Got a vertical mouse (went with Sanwa…surely if they make my arcade stick parts…), and so far it feels pretty nice.

Gotta figure out my keyboard situation though. It’s got a set height on it, and if I’m not sitting at the right height myself I get real bad finger cramps when I try to play stuff with it.

LMAO what was I thinking? I really suck at using this thing as a pointing device. I guess it’s time to get Centipede and Missile Command going.

I am also dying to know how it feels like to play with a stick and buttons smaller than a lego peg

wait like Sanwa Denshi? That Sanwa? I wonder if they make a massive palm-sized trackball mouse retrofitted from unsold segasonic cabinets.

Ah, maybe not. This looks to be their site.

It doesn’t seem like a bad mouse, though. Given my Logitech was constantly getting stuck, “actually works” is a pretty big improvement.

Mad Catz Street Fighter IV Tournament Edition Fightstick I customized back in the day for playing Ms. Pac-Man in Pac-Man Museum on PS3:

  • base and board: Mad Catz Street Fighter IV Tournament Edition Fightstick (PS3)
  • graphics: Ms. Pac-Man arcade cabinet vector artwork
  • cover: Mad Catz TE Full / TE-S Panel Covers, Artwork Print and Cut - TE Full Panel, and Acrylic Dust Washer
  • lever: Sanwa JLW-TM-8 Joystick
  • switches: Seimitsu LS-32 / Zippyy™ Joystick upgrade Kit
  • spring: Seimitsu LS-32 Replacement Spring
  • Wiring converter to plug a JLW into a Fightstick .187 to 5-pin Conversion Harness
  • buttons: Sanwa OBSC-30 White
  • shaft: Short JLW 10mm Stainless Steel Hollow Joystick Shaft
  • ball top: Wico Red 38mm top

Actual Ms. Pac-Man cabs have a small, short stick with a thick rubber grommet. I couldn’t find anything like that, so the stick was floppy and clacky by comparison. I was able to bend the switches so it impossible to hit diagonals with it, at least, which had been causing problems for me in that version of Ms. Pac-Man using other sticks (you could be moving up, graze diagonal up-right, say, move the stick back to up, but find your Ms. Pac still taking the next right, because that was the most recent new input, which is how the arcade version processes input).

Before that stick, I was using a RAP 3 with just some replaced button colors

Hey, cool side panels.

Foolishly trying to resurrect my Astro C40, a bad investment when it started getting stick drift, a worse investment when Sony released those little back button paddles that just snap onto the bottom of the DS4.

Gonna try to take the stick and d-pad modules apart and hose them down with contact cleaner, but the rubber grips on it have become gross and sticky. Any good ways of cleaning that up? Ideally without stripping the rubber off entirely?

bought this very cheap micro keyboard to use with my tablet, but it might get more use. it came with orange keycaps so i swapped those out to go gamer mode.

Can we do a crowd sourcing campaign to fund you becoming a street fighter pro so you can win EVO with it?

Currently perching on a folded up towel on the front of my chair to be at the right height for my keyboard/mouse. ^ _^

Yu Suzuki began development of Hang-On after deciding to design a motorcycle racing game as a way to use a torsion bar in an arcade game.

(^ Hang-On - Wikipedia)

There are two cabinet versions: the standard upright and a red or blue special edition with a large motorcycle to sit on. The upright has an actual motorcycle handlebar, throttle and break lever. The cabinet also has a simulated tachometer and speedometer.

The sit-down version lets you steer your bike by moving your weight left and right, but there are neither force feedback or mechanics in it. However, when making a turn, you can push down on the foot peg to make the bike turn faster.

The game screen is in the fairing:

Super Hang-On’s steering works similarly, as far as I can find (“A version of this game, in the full simulated motorcycle cabinet used by the original Hang-On, was released in 1991 as Limited Edition Hang-On” - Super Hang-On - Wikipedia):

(Yesterday I finally realized that I have Space Harrier, Out Run, and Super Hang-On (and Fantasy Zone : P) in virtual Club Sega arcades in Yakuza 6 (along with VF5FS (and Puyo Puyo : P) in a smaller Club Sega two blocks away) on PS4; the emulation is by M2 according to Wikipedia M2 (game developer) - Wikipedia but they probably lose a lot when you don’t have the mechanical cabs along for the ride; I found them hard to control with any real precision using the DS4’s analog stick, and slower and clunkier with a d-pad or arcade stick.)

One thing people don’t talk about much is that the Sit Down and Stand Up cabs have different level designs!! The Stand Up levels are significantly harder than the Sit Down cab levels!!!

You can play both in modern Sega Ages ports! Try them out and see the difference!

What the hell is this

This fightpad configuration is making me reallllllly curious though:

Dunno about being $179.99 curious though.

Also I bet it’ll weigh too much/be too wide for my hands though.

Oof yeah, this controller weighs: 298 gms (10.5 Oz)

In comparison:

  • Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 - 345ish gms
  • New Nintendo 3DS XL - 329 gms
  • Xbox Series X controller - 287 gms
  • PS5 Dualsense - 280 gms
  • Xbox One controller - 279 gms
  • Playstation Vita - 219-279 gms
  • New Nintendo 2DS XL - 261 gms
  • Switch Pro Controller - 246 gms
  • 8bitdo Pro 2 controller - 228 gms
  • PS4 controller - 210 gms
  • PS3 controller - 192 gms
  • Joy-Con - Left 48g, Right 41g

Shit is getting too heavy, goddammit

I switched from a New 3DS XL to a New 2DS XL because it was too heavy/getting painful to use for too long. Can’t imagine using a controller that’s even heavier, dang.
