wildly overpriced, ready for people to get tired of this hobby now

wow what the hell on that price, yeah.

One thing to note is that it has an on-board 2-port USB 3.2 Gen 2 hub. If this one is reliable (most aren’t), I can see this being really appealing to people who use a Mac laptop with few ports hooked up to an external monitor. Ideally it would be Thunderbolt, but I’m not going to expect that from an open source hardware vendor.

Weird decisions like floating switches and only offering two Jades or Royals. Can’t imagine it sounds good like that.

These traditional layout QMK boards are wheel reinventions to capitalize on the hobby’s growth. Most people are better off getting a nice Ducky or Leopold unless they know what they want to do with QMK or want a novel layout. There are other nice 65-75% boards like the GMMK Pro and NK65 that don’t bundle switches and come in significantly cheaper for better build quality.

Good point though most Mac laptop owners are going to be horrified at how noisy those switches are

I know enough developers who use Mac laptops and like clicky keyboard to believe there is a market for this, but it’s definitely not gonna be a mass market thing, much less at that price.

(Also I posted this with no frame of reference for what anything costs in the keyboard world anymore because I’ve been using the same Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro 2 for the last decade)

Fanatec also announced new pedals to go with that new wheel base, and say they’re “not done yet” - curious to see if they announce a new CSL wheel, given all but the WRC are seemingly out of production

Im on a system 76 laptop right now. Other than the fact that the first one I got was a dud (usb issues) its pretty great for linux-ing. 4 of these keyboards cost as much as this entire laptop.

New Fighting Commander Octa has (mouse style?) microswitched face buttons? Interesting.

And pressure-sensitive pad contacts in the dpad so you can adjust their activation sensitivity in software? Weird.

These were merely good for the price when Novelkeys started importing them last year but they’re clearancing them out for half price (30 cents each) and for that price there’s not a better tactile keyswitch.

They’re also the best color: periwinkle.

I got a bag from Aliexpress early/cheaper and like them a lot. Easily the cheapest way to get Halo-type stems.

Today I tested the polling rate of my Magic Trackpad 2 and learned it’s 90hz even over USB. Pretty sure they just capped it to juice the battery life numbers :frowning:

Well, just got this (summarised) email from Fanatec:

Pre-order for the CSL DD and it’s accessories is starting soon

We are now close to opening the first wave of pre-orders and we would like to explain how it will work. […] Due to very high demand, CSL DD pre-orders will be limited to one unit per customer. To keep it as fair as possible, we are also rolling out pre-orders in three waves:

First wave:

  • Must use an existing Fanatec account with previous order history
  • Must be subscribed to the Fanatec newsletter
  • One unit per customer

Second wave:

Third wave:

  • Available on the website for everyone
  • One unit per customer

That doesn’t seem particularly “fair” but I guess scalpers are being absolutely fucked at the moment. Also means I cannot buy it (promptly) from a local distributor even if I wanted to. :upside_down_face:

In any case, they also announced full pricing

Hmm. $500 base + maybe $150 used Clubsport pedals and a $100 rim is still so much money to spend on vroom vroom gameo control.

I mean, yeah, but this is taking what is usually $1500 tech and moving it into the $900 realm

the second CSL DD preorder wave opened today, I think I’m going to wait and see how things shake out later in the year though

when I bought the pre-DD wheel some months back (with what was apparently good timing!) I looked around and secondhand prices for the thing (which I watch like a hawk for every product category, especially living here) were barely off of what they were selling it brand new for, which told me that fanatec stuff is really, really worth what it costs in the three digit price range, and I have gotten a whole hell of a lot of joy out of it for that.
