Wow, they reinvented PS2-style pressure-sensitive buttons. I guess they’re good for the people who know they want it.

incidentally analogue buttons have been in a variety of specs for a long time, seems like everybody knows the PS2 had them but so did the OG Xbox and PS3 pads, not that they’re really much fun in application

seems a little weird that all these manufacturers ship bespoke tools that require you to get elbow deep in per-title configuration for what usually ends up being a bad experience anyway, but power 2 the player i suppose

One of the default configs for the analog switches is to make e.g. a half depress W and a full depress shift-W to sprint

It’s such a weird device

Now I want a trackball for under my spacebar.

8BitDo Pro 2 showed up. It’s good. I still hate Bluetooth pairing but the button action is great.

I got my 8BitDo Pro 2 yesterday. It’s a disappointment for me because unlike the last generation it no longer supports iOS in any of its modes. (It was unclear before trying to pair it – ā€œApple modeā€ got renamed to ā€œMac OS X modeā€ in the manual but it’s still referred to with the letter ā€œAā€ on the back of the controller.) So my dream of One Controller To Rule Them All remains deferred.

wait what? that’s definitely an accident/oversight. there’s an iOS app for it!

I wonder if the problem is actually the iOS reprogramming app. Previous gen basically tricked iOS into supporting it by pretending to be a PS4 controller. Maybe they couldn’t do that kind of shenanigan anymore if they wanted Apple to approve their app for the store

I got mine working in Sonic 2 on iOS 14.5 by going to settings → accessibility → switch control → switches and pairing using the Bluetooth there. You can turn off switch control after you pair it.

the pro2 isn’t out here until next week for some reason but i think with my use case of pc + switch and nothing else it probably can be the One True Controller, can finally get rid of the three i swap between now

how’s the dpad??

It’s good! Feels closest to a SNES or N64 pad but with more tactile bump on rolling over it.

My only misgiving is the pad isn’t as ergo as it could be because it’s following the SNES pad dimensions - sides could be slimmer for wrapping smallish hands around. It’s been a little fatiguing for Hitman but I’m a marginal case d/t arthritis. (cc @OneSecondBefore tho)

i won’t get another Pro+/2 because they haven’t fixed the ergonomics! but it is a pretty solid pad otherwise. i use the xbox series pad for most standard pad configurations because it’s generally better for what i want to use it for.

the m30 has slightly bad ergonomics (could use more purchase underneath) but it’s not horrible, the sn30 pro series really lacks in that regard

Yeah, this lip exists only for nostalgia/marketing purposes

I’m looking at tearing it down* to see if I can print a replacement top case that bevels it but I think the PCB might (unnecessarily) extend to the edge.

The back buttons and four way pairing/mapping switch are killer features.

* torx screws are a weird move from them

what kind of nuisance move is torx adoption at this point even

it’s like a kickback to ifixit

anyway I think that controller is pretty hideous even if it’s like, a maturation of their designs to date, it has no identity at all

Nintendo uses philips on Switch controllers. A whole lot of people opening up controllers may not have $10 to spend on specialty screwdrivers.

These are on their arcade stick as well, which is hilarious because they brag about it being simple and easy to mod. Having to go find something other than a phillips to unscrew an arcade stick is kinda the opposite of that.

This is always my kinda problem with their stuff; their identity is so tied to ā€œlooks like that other thing you likedā€. Like I love the arcade stick, but it also is just so clearly aping the Advantage for style that it annoys me. I am waiting on some buttons to swap in to make it look a little less like that, then i’m just putting stickers and suck all over it to distance it more.

I still have my Advantage; I didn’t need another one.

I like the stick because the light-up button labels and the bluetooth support are both really really good, it’s comparatively very cheap and small, and I’m a bit of a wireless obsessive

definitely swap the buttons though it’s a no-brainer
