I really don’t like the SF6 roster, so I hope these new characters are cool.

4 fuckin shotos at launch. honda and blanka even though no one plays either and they occupy the same functional space. retired unretired guile coming back again even though they also felt like bringing dee jay back. gief instead of literally any other grappler when sfv gief was a complete disaster that they never had a single idea for and no one liked. ed. fucking ed. the worst street fighter design this side of luke, and a character no one has ever enjoyed fighting. juri as the only sfiv character, even though we just got juri as the only sfiv character (sort of) in sfv. cammy again. can we take a fucking break from cammy? also functionally the same as juri anyway, mixup characters comfortable at mid range. game takes place in metro city but has no final fight characters. takes place after SF3 and is pretending to go for a ā€œstreetā€ aesthetic but has no sf3 characters.

it’s ok because Jamie is part of the Yun & Yang fan club

are you shitting me dude honda is literally my ST main, and blanka is one of my mains in USFIV. i think it’s good that they added all of the original world warriors, that should be like the litmus test for SF archetype balance

also they are completely different playstyles, in the way that deejay has guile tools but their applications are totally different

this is also just wrong dude i’m sorry. maybe they have similar gameplans in SFV but that’s a symptom of the entire game being completely sanded down of nuance

also I agree this is veritably wack as hell

I’m just glad there’s far more new characters than 5 got at launch if this is the base roster.

I mean, they’re pretty related, though. if we gotta have all the world warriors because we gotta, and then we gotta have akuma because he’s hype, and we gotta have cammy and juri because they’re hot, well, you start to run out of character slots. we could easily dump gief for haggar or hugo and lose nothing. we could swap guile and/or dee jay for remy. we could drop akuma for some unrelated character and still squeak by with 3 base shotos, etc. they made luke to replace ken and then kept ken.

the point is not that honda/blanka, guile/dee jay, and even ryu/ken play the exact same. they don’t. but they’re pretty damn close, and in all instances the differences can more or less be boiled down to ā€˜more defensive’ vs. ā€˜more offensive.’ is it really worth having those options instead of having more characters that are entirely different? you can pick one and get by. and then you let the players tweak the gameplan of a character through system mechanics, which is something capcom used to be good at, and which the variable options of the universal drive gauge in this game at least leave open the possibility of.

you can also just, like, make characters strong. what are the real differences between dee jay and guile? guile has a better boom, a defensive flash kick, an air throw, more versatile normals, and a generally top tier poke; dee jay gets a cracked cross up, better combo enders and corner carry. you can just make that one strong character, gating some of it behind meter so he has to choose.

yeah this is just the first time they put focus armor, ex moves, parrying, and guard cancels all in a single game as universal mechanics, and these are all things I wished for for SF6 and they miraculously delivered on my specific wishes, and ā€œok now let’s see how the legacy characters play with ALL of these at onceā€ is something that shouldn’t be a mystery. when they made New Generation the only legacy characters were Ken and Ryu and despite that parrying was a cool and inventive mechanic nobody wanted to play the game and it ended up being for little freaks

i’d like to suppose that the general appetite for novelty in 2022’s fightgame audience far exceeds 1997-99’s but i will also suppose that a japanese company is still completely haunted by ancient history

keep in mind SF3 was also a 2d arcade game released in 1997, at a time when both 2d and arcade games were considered quaint

ultimately the bigger, sorer oddity is that no one else is making games in sf’s general mould now - we have no idk World Heroes or Kizuna Encounter or Last Blade or or or
