melee island (fighting game club)

so tekken launches with 32 characters and all the nonsense customization shit actually goes on your character. sf6 launched with 18 characters and the nonsense customization shit is only for avatars. haven’t really played a tekken game since 3, I’ll prolly give this one a go.

That’s the advantage for Namco in sticking with the same, somewhat generic character animation system they’ve been using in Tekken since 2011.

There’s quite a lot of new animations for legacy moves in this one. Voice rerecording across the board too

Looks like this is just in the single-player action-RPG-ish “Invasion” mode: Mortal Kombat 1: All Elemental Damage Types & Character Resistances - Gamepur

Googling accidents suggested to me that MK11 had something similar.

Oh yeah that’s definitely not main game stuff. I don’t think 11 had anything that convoluted (it had a bunch of items you could take into those extra mode battles as assists, but it was pretty straightforward).

Saw a Netherrealm employee explaining the…three? Four different currencies in this thing? Seems unnecessary! And I guess it kinda is (it’s all just cosmetic stuff). But I guess you gotta know whether the palette or costume you wanna get is gotten with the expiring, handed out like candy seasonal currency, or the 100 “krystals” to $1 paid currency.

End of the day…I ain’t ponying up $8 to dress Sub Zero as a Dia de Los Muertos mariachi. Doesn’t even make sense!!

I don’t play MK, but if I did I’d be very annoyed by that sub zero outfit, it just makes him look like kung lao

I’m fine with goofy costumes but this doesn’t make sense! I shouldn’t even be calling mariachi gear “goofy,” that’s like a fifth of my culture right there! Weird choice!

Right now the seasonal currency is mostly to get the current seasonal (next 45 days or so) goods, which are, uh, Scorpion themed?

But it just makes everyone look like they’re wearing a McDonalds uniform. Went down a ketchup and mustard Slip & Slide. Not ideal!

I finished the story last night, might write about it here, even though that’s probably not exactly the thing this thread is for. In short - does some really cool stuff, and then kinda flops at the end (which is crushing, since it does something pretty fucking wild right before the ending).

SF6 has “only” 3 in-game currencies. ^ _^ But the current extra costume per character, with 10 color variants, only costs $1. I think. But the uh seven(?) extra colors for the default costume each cost $1. : P

(You can slowly earn an in-game currency to spend on colors. And oh it says you can earn the 2nd costume playing through World Tour mode, maybe that’s why it’s so cheap. Uh-oh. And apparently the TMNT costumes for player avatars are $15 each. ; D)

I opened the store to SF6 and went into a fugue state until I closed it. I am not going to figure that nonsense out, hahahah.

No see, it’s all very simple (it’s not but I like explaining things):

You got 3 currencies.

  • Kudos you earn from whatever you do (though doing daily/weekly/monthly challenges and anything involving online battles will earn you way more but I have seen people talk some strats that if you do single super easy CPU fights something over and you can earn at an even faster rate) but is pretty useless and you don’t actually spend it, just reach certain thresholds to unlock titles on a per character basis.
The only other sort of useful thing is that when they run the limited time Fighter Passes (of which they have one that is going right now until the 22nd) your accumulated Kudos will go towards unlocking Rental Tickets at the early levels. It doesn’t take too much kudos to get them all and more importantly you get these for free, it’s not part of the premium pass stuff you have to pay for. You can use Rental Tickets to try out any DLC character you don’t own for 1 hour per ticket in any mode.
I originally got carried away and wrote too much but didn't want to delete it all but it's really too much info you don't need.

There’s some other stuff you can get from the Fighter Pass as well. Here’s the current one that ends in like a week:

If it’s not clear it’s all pretty shit, mostly just stuff for your Avatar dude. They have all been like this! Earning the arcade game just means you can play it from the Gallery mode instead of waiting for it to come up in rotation in the Battle Hub. The music tracks can only be used to replace the music in the Battle Hub (which is actually a blessing considering how the TMNT theme is scheduled to continue playing on loop there for the rest of the month) and in Training Mode.

To top it off you only get this stuff if you actually pay $5 (250 Fighter Coins, I’ll get to that) for the Pass. The only positive is that if you max out the Fighter Pass (which isn’t too hard if you play a few sets of online matches a day and do the daily challenges) you also earn 250 Fighter Coins. So if you play enough then $5 dollars will get you all Fighter Pass rewards in perpetuity. I may have done this… The music is nice!

  • Drive Tickets is more of a real currency. In theory it’s the one you grind out by playing to buy stuff that you otherwise can pay real money for. The best thing you can do with these is to buy alt colours for characters. You could also buy their alt costumes but as you said you can earn these in the story mode (this also unlocks all the alt colours for the costume free). How long this takes depends on how long it takes to meet the character in the story. If you want it for Luke, Chun-li, Blanka or Dee Jay for example it should take no time at all but for Juri and JP you almost have to finish the entire thing first.
The thing that has become very clear though is that you can’t actually grind Drive Tickets out. So far you only earn them either from random promotional gifts or by doing weekly and monthly challenges so it’s more strictly time gated up to entirely the generosity of Capcom. This amounts to not a lot. I have earnt like 14000 drive tickets at this point and I have been playing pretty actively since launch. I may have missed a few challenges and promotions worth around 2500 tickets and if I was better at the game I could have won a few more from online tournaments. One alt colour for one character cost 1000 tickets and there are 7 to buy for each of the 18 characters (slight discount if you buy a full set). Math.

  • Lastly there’s Fighter Coins. This is the one you buy with real money or by eating Chipotle (but only in the US and on PS45). 250 of them is $5 with the usual tiny bulk discounts. Used to buy everything drive tickets can and then some, like full DLC characters if you want them piece meal instead of all 4 in the season pass on the Steam store.

  • Kudos: grind for stuff Capcom doesn’t mind giving away for free
  • Drive Tickets: earn a tiny bit of actual stuff by jumping through hoops, to get you hooked so that for the rest of it you will…
  • Fighter Coins: …give Capcom money!

They learned from SFV that if you let people grind to get something for free, don’t expect to sell much of it. ; )

What’s sort of weird to me is that I stupidly want the SF6 version of Super Turbo, but I CANNOT buy it from them right now; you can only buy one of the in-game classic arcade games per month, whichever is on the Premium Fighting Pass, and I probably missed ST whenever it was there, so now I would have to wait however many months for it to come back around, by which time I very well may have come to my senses and won’t get it. They could offer ST standalone right now for $5–the cost of the Premium Fighting Pass–and I would pay that. They’re leaving money on the table! Maybe they feel like they have to dribble the arcade games out because they don’t have enough other stuff to put in the PFP. Or maybe they feel like that would make it too obvious for players to compare it with Capcom Arcade Stadium where you can get ST at any time for $1.99.

Nope, not yet (I think). They seem to be going roughly in release order so the only Street Fighter game they’ve had so far is SF1. So still some ways off then until SSF2T but not quite as long. As for the arcade games in the Battle Hub, the rotation pattern seems to be weekly switch between Street Fighters (including Puzzle Fighter), monthly between Final Fight and Captain Commando, and daily for the rest.
