Love it when legendary long ago games finally get a domestic release years after the fact, and it’s for like a buck. It’s why I bought Progear, young me would have been blown away that I could play it on a console here for only a buck or two.

Gotta admit smooth scaling Space Harrier II might take me over the top (and ask a relative to get the Mini 2 as a Christmas Gift.)
Genesis Mini 2 Points: Desert Strike, Sewer Shark, Rolling Thunder 2, Ristar,
Megadrive Mini 2 Points: Lunar, Popful Mail, SegaQ, SMT,
Wow the box is so small!
"This is a complete Sega Megadrive Collection. If I have a bad day, or people piss me off at work I can just imagine, ‘I’ll go home and play Megadrive tonight.’ "
A complete Megadrive collection looks pretty classy.
There was a patlabor game on megadrive?
Looking to invest in a Mega Drive to live out my wicked sick fantasy of hooking it up to my HiFi for glorious Yamaha goodness…and while I do fancy building a small collection over time I could really go for a flashcart for the time being just to kickstart this mania
Any good rec’s on this end Select Buttoners?

(There may be a better place for you to order one depending on where you live here though: Distributors )
With the caveat that I don’t actually have one of these myself, but I’ve been trucking along with a Megaeverdrive X5 for about four years now, and this thing plays Sega CD games off flash cards. If I was going to get one flash cart at this point, this would be the one.
Oh: and beware that there’s a lot of different megadrive models and only some have a Yamaha in them. Even when it comes to ones with model 1 shells.
Yeah I got the Everdrive Pro and it worked great. There should be a sale in 3 weeks during black friday but remember krizz was in the Ukraine so who knows.
Nice one chums! I threw some petty change at a 1600-05 Model. Here is what its guts look like:
On the subject of flashcarts I have seen Everdrives going for Reasonably Sally to Silly Billy prices. I will scratch my chin over this but did wonder IF a 50/60hz switcher is required to run non-PAL titles emulated (being a PAL Person myself) or does this not figure?
all megadrives and genesis consoles have a Yamaha synth chip in them, but they are not all the same chip
earlier models will have a discrete YM2612, later models have a YM3438 on an ASIC
more details: https://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?7796-GUIDE-Telling-apart-good-Genesis-1s-and-Genesis-2s-from-bad-ones
this is going to be a hot take
I fully admit and understand that the two YM chips sound different and some games clearly sound better on a 2612 versus later ASIC revisions
I don’t think it’s as wide a gulf as a lot of people make it out to be in the majority of games and I think it’s far less pronounced a difference than going from emulator (even with a low-pass filter enabled) to actual hardware
why yes, I do own a console with a 3438 in it (a Model 1 even), why do you ask
Allow me to cool your Hottest of Takes with some random ebay seller’s chipboard that requires greater knowhow than some Quasi Placebo Addict (me) knows about Genesis Triple Bypass | RetroRGB
It is too early to regret my PAL HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS-STEREO SOUND purchase but I am considering the levels of dickery involved in sexing it up to the maximum
the great thing about a Model 1 is that you have the highest floor of all the models w/r/t quality and managing to get a 2612 console just makes that much better a buy
The sprite scaling is pretty impressive, although it comes with the trade off of excessive sprite flicker. Space Harrier 1 is especially bad with it. Still a cool bonus though.
Interestingly, both Shining Force 2 and Soleil have had all instances of crucifixes on churches removed and replaced with angel iconography. As far as I can tell, none of the dialogue referencing God in Soleil has been altered, although I haven’t gotten to Saint Heaven yet.
There’s also apparently some censorship stuff in Revenge of Shinobi (spiderman, batman, godzilla etc replaced in all versions) and Bare Knuckle 3 (the pier scene in the first stage removed entirely). Doesn’t bother me really, but surprised they didn’t just replace Ash with Shiva like the western version.
I’d never played Night Striker before, it’s pretty rough to play but I kinda like the blocky aesthetic because it reminds me of the Atari Lynx
Looks like Christ may have forsaken the kingdom of Soleil, but not the Gain Ground combat simulation system.
I read online that if you hold right when selecting the options in the new Mark V Space Harriers, you unlock a secret deflicker option. Turns out it’s true, and it works pretty well. Only thing is it makes some sprites become invisible when they would have flickered, which again for the first game is a lot more pronounced.
I used to have Earthworm Jim 2 on PC back in the day, but I don’t remember it being quite so frustrating. Every level is a different gimmick, and most of them wear out their welcome pretty quickly. The game got deleted off the PC for some reason I don’t remember, and apparently I never really missed it.
That’s a charitable way of looking at it…anything far enough into the background is illegible to me. Though I think it’s impressive they managed to keep as much of the experience as they did on this hardware back in '93. Really wish they just popped in a mame rom as an alternate option
The JP MD2 lineup got Starblade and I feel like that suffered even more severe cutbacks. Wireframe ship substitutes do look neat, even though out of place with the other fully rendered in 3D objects.
The night striker DLC for Darius Burst is fun
I think it should be held in just as high regard as Space Harrier…it looks amazing, has one of the most banging Zuntata soundtracks ever and they’ve got the Darius/Outrun branching which in practice doesn’t mean much outside of changing color palettes and maybe enemy patterns of a few set in stone level variations…up until the endings where each has its own “time to go super” ship transformation.
It’s definitely worth at least one go in arcade form though this version is just too hard on the eyes
A couple of interesting things I found on the UK mini 2:
If you switch to Korean you get the US menu design and game versions, except for Soleil which apparently had an actual Korean version.
If you switch to Chinese, you get the Japanese menu design and game versions, except again for Soleil which is now the US Crusader of Centy version. Playing it for a few minutes I noticed immediately how much faster it is than the PAL version lol.
I imagine the US mini is like the previous one, where if you switch to Italian, you get the UK menu design and english PAL versions, except where an Italian version exists.
My MD Dream project has been dogged with failure with 30 quid pissed down the drain on a PAL machine that would respond either with nothing but a hard buzzing sound (LCD) or an image so drowned in glitch (Monitor) regardless of A/V cables and input configuration
In better news I am now in possession of a Sony Triniton PVM2MDE that runs my PS2 & GC like an angel frenching my eyes like I was the last man alive. Could use some more BNC plugs to reduce unwanted interference although this not appear too obvious to me at present as an utter novice at these things
And yes I grabbed myself an Everdrive X3 because Why Not?..and then immediately threw some cash at a multi-region MD1 with the same sense of reckless abandon
Lord help me when I finally decide on one of those overpriced and very sexy flashcarts for my NTSC-J Saturn
