what are you referring to here? Pseudo Saturn carts? Satiator? Some other ODE (MODE, Fenrir)?
before i got my MODE for the Saturn, i used a generic Action Replay, flashed with Pseudo Saturn Kai using the disc swap trick and a burned CD-R. it was fantastic! and a lot cheaper than the ODE options
Yeah I had been thinking about one of those Satiators for sure but I am intrigued by your suggestion! Are there any videos on this or is it similar to the old Playstation 1 trick?
After a series of setbacks (among my Saturn taunting me with Come To Bed Eyes) I am now comfortably ready to embrace Sega 16-Bit gaming in all its glory! My current hitlist -as-of this morning- includes:
Rocket Knight Adventures/Sparkster
Contra Hard Corps
Castlevania Bloodlines
Must admit that I was a little bummed-out with Super Hang-On not having the smoothest scaling but this clearly shows the love M2 poured into the 3DS version. I am also grateful for @Rudie for dissuading me from touching Story of Thor with a barge pole.
Feel free to shout at me any/all of the good platformers/shooters that exist for this blessed system!
Sparkster is… not as good as RKA. I’d save it for after playing CV and Contra
play the US version of HC with no life bar, it will make you a better person
random game-y bobs off the top of my head:
Ghostbusters, a cool, unique platformer (as in it’s not the David Crane game) deved by Compile
Ristar if you haven’t because you might as well play the most Sonic-adjacent Sega game
Dynamite Headdy because it’s a dumb Treasure game
McDonald’s TreasureLand Adventure, the good McDonald’s game and the first Treasure game
Landstalker, which is technically an action-RPG Zelda-thing, but the puzzles in the game are by and large “platform at a 3/4ths isometric perspective”
Taz-Mania
Magical Taruruuto-kun, a kind of easy anime tie-in with some neat movement tech and also it’s a Game Freak game so it’s chock full of Sugimori pixel art
Pulseman because you might as well play the other MD Game Freak game while you’re at it
Batman, which, if I’m being honest, is probably the worst of the three Sunsoft Batman 89 games, but it’s still good
Anything from Wolf Team/Telenet because janky ass games with too long anime intermissions is getting all the 68k flavor your life really needs
High Seas Havoc, probably the best fake Sonic on the console
Socket, the other good fake Sonic. also IIRC the Japan and US versions have different levels so check that maybe
Quackshot, the best Disney game on the system (fuck you xxx of Illusion)
Hook if you haven’t played the original version on the SNES, play the Sega CD version where they subbed in the movie’s soundtrack for the kinda poor FM recreations done for the cart version of the port
both Battle Mania/Trouble Shooter games even though they aren’t platformers because they are good games and have amazing soundtracks
Marvel Land, the game I will go to my grave claiming is the best platformer on the system because I am insane
Buster’s Hidden Treasure, which is probably the purest platformer Konami put on the system and also really good
Shinobi 3/Super Shinobi 2, play this game, play it play it play it
also I should warn you, if you’re doing a deep dive into the library, you will probably end up Amiga poisoned if you aren’t already (I’m going to assume you already are to some degree because you’re calling it a Mega Drive)
Darius II is visually gorgeous and possessing of character among its many fishies, branching pathways and infuriating patterns of Game Over. The stimulation received from learning Not To Shoot & When To Bomb Instead feels unique and probably speaks to the legacy of these games and why they exist on modern consoles at all. Definitely my favorite HoriShmup tested on the system so far
Ranger X puzzles me with its resource management, ropey fast-slow movement and stage design but I may find myself liking it more just to explore its wonderful pixels and vector cinematics
Batman is so close to being promising but exhausts itself by the time you’re Batmobilin’ and never does anything remotely interesting with the grappling hook whereas the NES game had very sticky wall jump action and a proper arsenal for Bats. Music fucking owns though
Gunstar Heroes was enjoyed up-to Tumbling Dice and became a hard stopping point for me. That level can get bent forever and I do not respect the execution of the concept one itty bit. A shame though because I was very into it for the first time with it proper
I refuse to pass comment on Contra: Hard Corps because I’m still trying to beat it (and I never want it to end)
Spent an hour or so with Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider before establishing that Shinobi 3 by way of Mega Man is an unfortunate (and cursed) blend that had me questioning how long the devs had spent making a Flying Ninja Kick so unappealing and just give Moonrider some fucking shurikens
So I played Shinobi 3 until losing all continues falling off the screen seconds into the last stage
I was pleasantly surprised by how forgiving the difficulty was compared to its predecessor (which becomes annoying quite quickly by the 2nd stage) but there was a few moments that seemed to demand cancelling wall jumps to vault ledges in the opposite direction that seemed more natural than something you would intend to replicate; although on reflection this was probably just the elevator level
The freefalling stage was rotten with expert jumping that I had spent the past hour underthinking, and I still have no idea how I accomplished it after dying the once (and instantly). Just to think that there was a nuanced platforming game under the hood all along was both a revelation and proof that this game will remain timeless for future peeps to discover
Shout out to whatever stage that was literally a SMW Ghost House gimmick! Well played
I don’t think I touched any of the other ninjustu tech other than the default electric body shield and will not pretend that it wasn’t more useful than choosing anything else
Verdict: Better than the box art
I think the element I enjoy most about my sick sad MD mania is that I can cope with not finishing these things in a single setting on first try. That, and the removal of save states lends a real urgency and a more profound emotional investment. And while I can technically save on my Everdrive X3 I refuse to void the purity of experience with it (but maybe for a Phantasy Star)
