playing the first quarter or so of quantum break earlier this year, i think that’s just an all round better game than it should be. maybe my perspective here is broken by what sony has pumped out as prestige gaming since, but what i saw of qb was just way more fun and compelling.
I mean what’s cool about remedy’s games is that they have prestige production values but generally don’t give a shit about actual “prestige”.
the sony prestige (like the etymology of that word) is like 3 layers removed from what it’s trying to be. remedy know the tone they won’t (maybe dismissively described as syfy) but they almost always nail it, making a finished product that is more than the sum of it’s parts. i’m not even a big fan of theirs, but they just really get what they are doing so well that 3hrs of their most maligned game has had a bigger impact on me than 40hrs of tlou2 (or even the beloved tv adaptation of tlou).
i dunno it’s pretty spot on for quantum break and control at least, remedy has definitely always struck this charming tone with their games that reminds me a lot of good mid budget late 90s/2000s TV…shit like alan wake 2 is soooo millenniumpilled its unbelievable…i have seen control compared to warehouse 13 or friday the 13th the tv show many times. people used to love the sci-fi channel, it wasnt always derisive! we mustn’t forget that!
im totally supportive of that reference, it just seems to come up pretty often as a negative point (see also: the cw) but i don’t think the people using it that way have actually spent the time to realise that shows on those networks are written significantly better than the majority of well written video games. the low bar for tv is still higher than a lot of what we end up with in this medium.
i would much rather watch 5 seasons of gotham than play whatever fucking bullshit naughty dog makes now yeah hahahaha
what they’re going for is cool though, it feels more like it’s specifically 90’s cult favorite network sci-fi shows like quantum leap and sliders. and sure like that kind of show is the progenitor of syfy kinda stuff but it’s also better pound for pound. I kinda think that’s what makes quantum break work though, because alan wake went for twin peaks and they just bit off more than they coiuld chew with that (but even then one wonders how much closer they’d have gotten if the development of that game wasn’t such a disaster). they set their sights on something more attainable but no less cool with both quantum break and control and that’s why they work so well. but it is satisfying seeing them mostly nail it with alan wake 2, especially because at times it’s going for more of a twin peaks: the return kinda thing. it still has the 90’s cult sci-fi serial vibe though.
The insanely annoying IT guy with immense power everyone is forced to talk to is one of the best remedy henchmen ever. I also like the sad man who never gets to see his wife because his nissan is cool
it’s really cool to see how lynch and sam lake diverged on this idea because they are obviously trying to do two very different things with their shit but both independently decided it would be Fucked Up if an evil slimy gross version of the main character took over their life with unclear consequences
Also sorry to triple post but one of the enemies in Quantum Break just yelled “It’s Joyce! Geddim!!!” like a Max Payne thug and then I made him do a backflip by shooting him in the face with a shotgun… that basically encapsulates why remedy games are the best to play and enjoy :')
millenniumistic…
This made-up word is naughty and I must resist
after you watch millennium it makes so much sense (they use it in the actual show) anything late 90s and mysterious and possibly haunted or maybe divine is millenniumistic
its a really useful word actually
The world of early modern esoteric spooks. The silver case is millenniumistic, but so is 25th ward. Movies like Frailty and Angel Dust, the John Huckert movie Hard, …stuff on that X-Files shit. Alan Wake has always been very millenniumistic especially because it is a thinly veiled biography of Stephen King. Why else is he so shitty to women and constantly being attacked by vehicles?
Gabriel Knight 3
Gabriel Knight 3 is a perfect example of this!
Millennium was Chris Carter’s personal apology addressed to me for not caring about The X Files, but also came at the social cost of never having anyone to talk about the adventures of a milk-filled synthetic android and a ‘father figure’ with
asdiojasduihasuhahahahahahahaha
the dark place is actually just Alan coping really hard with his cocaine problem, he wrote Initiation while really high like Cujo
still dying thinking about how the end music of episode SCRATCH has a line about how raoul duke and bukowski are his crew and “they fit together like the shotgun fits in hemmingway’s mouth” lmfao. what a game.
It’s a fine line between the stupid and the sublime… in Night Springs.
some people see something stupid in the remedy style, I see something sublime. I do think alan wake 1 was their weakest game though. just a little too tedious for me. this was perfect though.
that’s not far off lol
even in the three chapters I played the music was so on the nose it was hilarious I couldn’t get over the fact that the lyrics of every song were about the gameplay segment I just played through. I love remedy so much. There is not another game developer on this planet I get as excited about… the best thing about being a true doom remedy fan is every one of their games feels like its just for you
