I feel like there was a turning point in my life when I was reading a walkthrough for SMRPG in Nintendo Power, despite not owning a SNES at that time, or ever expecting to own a game console that wasn’t a gameboy. It mentioned how there were invisible chests you can only get by jumping on an NPC’s head as he walks across a room, and jumping at the right time, and if you missed them they were gone forever. Reading that broke something about how I saw the world around me.
i’m not sure if it’s been mentioned, but i really enjoy how you can move Mario around with the dpad in this (even if it’s kind of a hidden option). i switch back and forth, but dpad feels good
they made that unmissable in the remake but in the beginning of the game there’s a patrolling toad for only the part where the castle is under attack, once things get peaceful he disappears
in the remake he’s always there
did you change the battle controls so pressing the button for your move is also the confirm button for it I like that they brought that back

when i first launched the game and it didn’t have those by default, i was disappointed - it was a huge relief to find it in the options menu.

It’s a marimba. A marimba has much larger resonating tubes that give it a fuller, deeper sound. Xylophones have smaller keys and often no resonating tubes, or sometimes little stubby ones, that give them a more plinky, all-treble sound.
Cartoon skeleton = xylophone
Videogame jungle = marimba

Glockenspiels have steel keys and so they sound like what you would think, they have a shimmery bell-like timbre, often played with brass mallets for even more metallic harshness

okay slight beef with the map. you have to perfectly press diagonal right to go to the volcano from nimbus land even though theres TWO places to go, one down and one right. WHY CANT I JUST PRESS RIGHT? YOU CANT MAKE ME USE THE JOYPAD. YOU CANT I WILL STUBBORNLY INPUT INCORRECTLY UNTIL I RANDOMLY DO IT RIGHT oh nevermind just as i was complaining this i decided to go back and forth a few times and its really easy now that i know its requiring a diagonal input. its still weird. right would have worked just fine

the lava everywhere DOES look great, but the areas with tons of lava dont feel as dangerous and getting-close-to-the end as they do in the snes version. i remember like the darkness contrasted with nimbus land made it feel like you went to fucking norfair, just straight to hell.
even these areas are brighter BUT the little hot ashes rising up from the lava are a nice touch. i never forget im in a lava pit in a volcano
oh yeah i always forget about this attack. i think because i never had any idea how fucking hard i had to rotate my stick BUT THIS HAS A METER THAT I CAN FILL. I CAN JUST STOP HURTING MY HAND WHEN ITS DONE. WOW! WHAT A CONCEPT!
