Mario SUCKS... or does it???

Playing NES SMB3 in multiplayer helps contextualize the weird boardgameyness of the world maps in that game. It’s very neat, but also quite understandable why they never returned to that particular approach.

I played some Mario 2 the other night as well and the limited continues is certainly a choice. I will have to become even more patient than I already am

the removal of the strict stage timer in SMB2US is such a vibe

Super Mario World was the first media sequel I ever experienced that made me want the previous version. Like Zelda 2 and SMB2u were unique in ways I felt was good even if the games were weird. SMW felt like a weird downgrade with saving for idk why. Bc it’s a theme park with fake hazards? What are lives for? Why is this so easy

SMW might’ve been the first Mario I beat without my hands being sweaty

I never as a kid thought to be disappointed by it despite having a much more exciting experience playing 3 with my friend. I really loved the atmosphere of world, especially the music and sound effects. There’s something about the crunchy echos especially. It feels like a place built for hanging out rather than a harsh land for adventuring through. It was certainly less harrowing for someone who only ever played it at friends houses and never had it at home to get good at it.

i was definitely disappointed by world as a kid who played waaay too much mario on the NES. first played it at a friend’s house and was like “ew why is the control so floaty and mushy?”

i’ve come to appreciate it as an adult, but that was only in retrospect having played mario maker and kaizo hacks before ever finishing the main game.

jumping on yoshi and getting an extra drum track is what makes mario world undeniable to me

For me I think the biggest draw to World is the scope. It just felt there could be anything out there to my child mind and as an adult it just feels very content robust.

i used to mostly play mario 3 ages 5-7 and then world at ages 11-13 so naturally world is the best

I blew someone’s mind in a discord this week when I told them about getting 44 coins in 1-4 in mario 3

didn’t think that would be hot info ever again

always thought it was kind of funny how the holy shit secrets are so front loaded into the first couple worlds

Counterpoint: SMW takes place in only one land (Dinosaur Land). SMB3 takes place in 8 different lands.

there’s one of the coin collecting levels in every world unless I’m making things up to make the game better hahha. I only remember how to get the first one off the top of my head, but I also rememeber never bothering getting the ones that give an anchor instead of a p wing

I think I remmeber the first one so well cuz as a kid I’d reset the fucking game if I finished 1-4 and didn’t see that wiggling monochrome shroom

I should play mario 3

Fully mechanized hell in Mario 3 world 8 is probably my favorite themed area in the 2D games. Really benefits from all NES games inherently existing in the black abyss

I constantly think about the discovery maybe 13 years ago that in Mario 3 the treasure chest content is decided the second you enter the house and doesn’t matter which treasure chest you pick.
