Marathon can’t come out soon enough. Embark’s just doing marketing for them at this point.
On one hand, there’s the possibility that with ARC Raiders doing so well, that there will a bunch of people who have been exposed to the concept of an extraction shooter thanks to ARC not being as immediately hostile as something like Tarkov, who are now bored, and would be ready for a game that has more of long-term path in terms of challenging endgame content and modes like Ranked that are designed for people who have put in hundreds of hours. Not to mention a game that is far more focused on PvP mechanically (FPP vs TPP, little to no (or negative) incentive to cooperate), which should lead to a more focused experience than ARC’s wild swings between clubhouse lobbies where everybody is your friend or a third-person chokepoint hellscape where muting proximity chat for everybody is a must given the amount of slurs per second. Let a thousand headshots bloom.
On the other, if I were somebody at Bungie (or Sony), I would be hella nervous about this launch. The most popular (by far) title in the genre has relatively recently launched with an emphasis on accessibility to non-sweaty tryhards, and you are the much larger, corporate-backed studio releasing second, and releasing a game that seems to be targeted to the hardcore, a game that is, if reports from playtests are to be believed, going to be an extremely rough experience for people who are not willing to take on a ruthless approach, or don’t have the mechanical skills to back up that style of play. And you’ve tied it to an IP whose fans are largely a demographic whose reflexes will be absolutely ravaged by age and whose association with the original series is just as much linked to discussions on the nature of consciousness as fragging out with your buddies. And you’re going to be feeding them into the meatgrinder of the genre that is arguably inherently antisocial. I’d be absolutely sweating.
It’s all about the pre-launch free weekend. The one for Arc Raiders took me from zero to $60. Maybe they’ll shadowdrop it on the “State of Play” on Thursday.
… and then of course I open twitter and someone tells me not to get my hopes up for that…
Eat Up Marton
Since this thread is kind of a blend of discussion of extraction shooters as well as Marathon in particular, going to post this here, which is a really good breakdown of some PvP interactions in ARC Raiders:
The streamer in this case has a long-standing background in Counter-Strike and Valorant and clearly has a knack for being able to analyze situations and talk through decisions that he’s making.
(It also highlights why I’m concerned about Bungie bowing to the whims of Redditors and putting proximity chat into the game when they were originally going to leave it out — while there are some decent moments in these clips it overall is a huge negative, especially considering how much it seems likely to clash with the overall aesthetics of Marathon. Love to have sleek architectural minimalism juxtaposed against flashy information overload while experiencing the aural pleasures of a CoD lobby.)
I think I’m interested in this game in spite of myself? it seems like something I would play for two to three months in a semi-sweaty way, would definitely like to check it out w sbutts this weekend if anyone is planning on doing the demo thing.
I will server slam. I’m on PC and idk if they’re slamming cross play
Cross-play and cross-save confirmed for slam.
All the slam infos:
i’m really glad she’s getting her bag but this stuff looks much cooler in a game than on gamer things
Yeah! I’d love to see her art in a game that didn’t steal it from her someday.
That’s nice. I bought the red and black one.
The yellow one looks great, it’ll look even better in a couple years when I inevitably put a few tea rings on it.
the same could be said for all gamer things
