marathon (20XX)

torn about playing this because even though i have minimal idea what an ‘extraction shooter’ is, between destiny 1 and the year or so i played of 2 i can clearly tolerate some nonsense for Sick Handcannons but installing a ring 0 rootkit to play a videogame seems fucking ridiculous

Severely bummed to report there is no toggle/open mic option for proximity chat. Knew they were going to sabotage this somehow. Holding push to talk is not something we do on console (especially right on the d-pad, wtf). Goodbye to laughter or shrieks or other spontaneous, surprised human sounds. Oh well.

I’ll make do.

Let me tell you the best thing about this game before the thinkpieces hit. Here is your map. You can’t zoom in on it. That’s all the icons you get. You gotta look around and learn it; you gotta be present in the world instead of playing the map that spoils the whole territory Baudrillard-style like in every other BR/extraction game. You gotta find the secrets and the undergrounds and the side doors.

(OK apparently Tarkov has an even more useless in-game map so I gotta hand it to them; I bought it five years ago and I’ll get around to playing it someday.)

I was in one of the beta tests and still have no idea what I can and cannot say but I can’t imagine I can say anything that everyone else will not be able to play in the server slam.

It’s been interesting to see everyone go back and forth on the ethics of extraction shooters and how demoralizing Marathon would feel to play when honestly it just felt like team death match on a big map. Barely anyone talked, I never encountered any proximity chat, gaining and losing loot didn’t really bother me much. Loot just felt like choosing a starting load out before finding random weapons on the field. “Objectives” were just a means to get people to go to the same areas so you can fight each other. So I guess it was like a battle royale except without the shrinking play area. PvE did not feel like a draw but rather some thing to shoot at until you found some more players to fight.

So if you just wanted to play destiny pvp I guess Marathon just feels like a new iteration of that.

played a few hours of it, but not enough to really form any strong opinions. nothing’s blowing me away but nothing is like egregiously bad, either. it’s pretty!

game really punishes you for moving – your heat meter (stamina) runs out FAST and recharges very slowly, and it’s pretty terrible to be out during a fight, so there’s a lot of walking around so you don’t get caught with your pants down.

also every little scratch takes resources to fix – there’s no recharging health outside of the healer dude’s ability afaik.

was expecting apex run and gunning but this is decidedly much slower.

this is all theoretically fine if i get good fights but so far it’s hard to find people and about half the fights i get into the players run away (assumedly because they’re out of resources). part of the problem is that i don’t know what all the sounds mean yet. maybe it’ll be much easier to track players down when i understand what sounds are NPCs/events and what are players.

Oh, this actually does remind me that 90% of my matches in Marathon involved never seeing another enemy team, and many of them also involved no PvE either. It was just walking to the objective points on your HUD, wandering around trying to find the interactables, and then extracting with no fuss. So don’t know what’s up with that! It could be the Lonely Multiplayer Game of 2026.

I recall reading “six teams per map” and I’m wondering if that applies to solos as well.

my initial impressions as someone who didn’t really like Destiny or Apex (and is totally unfamiliar with where Apex-like games have gone since) are fairly positive. the presentation feels correct for Bungie, it has a bunch of weird forbidding transhumanism poking through the edges of everything, the loadouts are fairly intelligible, the combat is adequately paced and isn’t too compulsive or punishing, the balance between PvE and PvP avoids it feeling too exhausting, the Helldivers-esque evac mechanics are good. the quests they give you seem obnoxiously incremental but that’s to be expected?

for all intents and purposes I am a very casual member of this game’s audience but I think I’m in

I was trying to place what it reminded me of and I think it’s one or the other of the Descent-likes that came out like 5-10 years ago, the autonomous enemies that you’re not entirely sure are even supposed to be guarding these wrecks and the pickups have a very similar vibe

I played the tutorial, read through a bunch of tool tips, messed around in my load out and checked out the other runner shells, then played my first real run with a couple randos. One was afk from the start but the other one was cool. We hung together and Did the Stuff You Do, mainly looting and fending off robots. I had to revive him twice and killed over twice as many enemies as he did and also looted way more stuff than he did. I guess Kratos97God was a real person and not a bot?

Anyway I really like the sound design and the opening cinematic and the whole vibe in general. The shooting feels fine I guess. Me liking it probably means this is doomed to failure because I am not the target audience. I didn’t play Destiny much outside that first demo on PS3 and I doubt I’ll play this much either since it’s a live game where you can’t just pause things at any moment and go take care of something if you need to (only option is to go afk which feels rude to the other people playing). But I probably will play a few more runs over the weekend. Needs more terminals and lore dumps to be a real Marathon though.
