marathon (20XX)

yeah, I also really liked what I played of this, just didn’t have a group or time to get into it and wasn’t as bowled over as I originally was by Siege so it didn’t retain me. but glad to hear it’s legitimately good in your eyes!

I just hopped back on THE FINALS and when you’re ready to respawn it says PRESS START (CREDITS 1) but pressing start just opens the settings because they actually want you to press X and I think that’s why I dropped this game before

The 120fps mode on PS5 is an impressive feat

edit: I guess the start button is technically the Options button these days. I wonder if kids call it that.

edit 2: Running around with a sword and grappling hook is really fun

oh lol i’ve never played it on a controller but that’s a pretty funny oversight. does add to this feeling i get about the theme being slapped on. feels like they made a frankenstein of a game and then didn’t quite know how to apply a theme to it in a way that made sense.

i think embark has the fundamentals of shooters down pat (look, feel, interactions) but the higher level stuff can escape them. i do think they are a very talented studio and will be looking for what they do next. hopefully these like shaky higher abstraction level designs and clumsy theming are growing pains and not a pattern for them.

I didn’t know anything about the finals and had assumed based purely on the theming that it was a generic modern GaaS shooter instead of attempting a new take on arena shooters. This is cool!

there are like five guys who do the weapon animations for every video game now and they keep floating around between developers because it sucks working for EA and Activision and whatnot. A bunch of the Battlefield animators ended up working on The Finals for example. It’s really interesting seeing how so many animators have copied Hyper’s work for example - once you notice this it’s impossible not to, but games literally don’t credit individual gun animations to the artist so you have to be familiar with their work to see how often they get ripped off. His MW2019 animations took over the world for a while there. It’s also crazy because he was making custom Counter-Strike animations when I was a kid. It feels like there have always only been a handful of people at any time who can animate guns well.

Anyway in this instance everyone loves Terminator 2 so they always give the 1887 the flashiest animations possible, they did this in Call of Duty also. And to be fair, lever action shotguns are sick as hell.

Site is a garbage fire so here’s the info:

To my knowledge, this will be the first extraction shooter with a designated Ranked mode. Arc Raiders has rankings, but only for doing PvE activities that rotate weekly.

I love the concept of being able to loot dogtags to find out what rank they were (and get bonus points).

I dont want to play ranked I want to shoot dual shotguns and read text terminals where Durandal is crashing out because they cancelled his favorite show.

There are collectible walls-o-text but unfortunately they don’t let you read them in the world. And yes these games are desperately lacking akimbo shotties.

That particular extract is my least favorite on Buried City. While it does have the advantage of not having any ARC that spawn in it, the one way in aspect of it makes it really easy for somebody to do exactly this, camp it, put down some traps and then sit there with the gun that’s specifically the best at holding close-quarters defensive positions.

Guys pushing didn’t really seem to have a plan there, at least soften the dude up with some nades before you go down (although they don’t seem to understand what the Torrente is, so uh, they weren’t thinking on that level yet). He didn’t even down the second guy, so he probably could have extracted on the next train so long as nobody else came along and got him.

The Ranked mode in Marathon make sense because it has a gear requirement, so anybody taking part has to be serious in the sense that they’re putting a bunch on the line, and there’s clear incentive to PvP to try and score-boost. So a perfect sink for people who have a ton of time in the game to bring in their best stuff (which is mostly lacking in ARC Raiders, the expedition is really the only motivator for that kind of thing currently).

If they are going back and actually voicing all the quest lines, I hope they keep the Microsoft Sam versions in as an option for the historical record.

If they stopped using LLMs I would consider buying the game. It looks fun. But I just don’t want to support that crap.
